The Story of Zeus

So, back in July of 2006, one of my then co-workers was planning on visiting the Welland Humane Society to visit a dog that she and her daughter had found as a stray.  They could not keep the dog so they brought it in with hopes that it would either find its owner or be adopted.  For some unknown reason, I decided to go with her even though Welland is a little out of the way for me.

So, after work, we zipped down the highway and arrived at the shelter.

DB showed me the dog that she had rescued and suggested that I could be the one to adopt it.  I had never had my own dog – we did have a dog while I was growing up and although I did a lot of the work for the dog (feeding, walking, cleaning up after it), it was actually my sister’s dog – Brandy.  I came up with the name.  🙂

Anyway, I don’t remember what breed this specific dog was that DB rescued but it didn’t seem to like me and therefore, I didn’t really care for it.

I had no intention of adopting a dog.  None at all.  Then I came across this dog in its cage:

Zeus 1

The name tag on the cage read Iggy.  OK, sure, why not.  Nice name, I suppose.

Anyway, Iggy seemed like a nice dog.  As you can see, he was a happy looking dog and he seemed to be smiling.  He let me pat him through the cage and made no attempt to bite at me.  That was nice.

After spending 15 minutes or so looking at the various dogs, we left.  DB was disappointed that I had no intention of adopting the dog that she wanted me to, but I was thinking about the smallish Shepherd cross.

A few days passed and I kept thinking about this dog.  I called the shelter and asked if the dog that I was looking at was still available.  They assumed the dog that DB had rescued – I quickly corrected them and said, no, Iggy.  Yes, he’s still available.  So, at lunch, I made the trip back to Welland and put a deposit down on him and filled in the paperwork.

I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be approved since I lived in an apartment with no fenced in backyard, etc.  As far as I am aware, they never contacted the landlord nor did any other checks.  I was asked to submit some references and they weren’t called either.

There was a delay in me picking up my new addition.  I was told that Iggy would be about a week before they would be able to get him neutered.  I told them that I would not be using that name and chose Zeus.  They changed his name tag right away.

For the next week or so, I would spend my lunch hour by driving to Welland and taking him for a walk so he’d get to know me.

The day came for me to pick him up and I asked my friend to come with me.  On the trip home, Zeus puked.  Nice.  Well, as it turned out, he puked every time we went for a car ride.  I asked the vet about it and he said that it was just nerves and that he’d probably be ok after a few weeks.  Sure enough, Zeus doesn’t puke on car trips any longer.

Zeus 2

Here is Zeus a few weeks later, guarding my trailer that I had in Dunnville.  Although he is about 40 lbs (now, then he was a little skinny and was around 30 lbs), he thinks he’s a full-size German Shepherd and often acts like it.

As of August 3 (only a few weeks from now), Zeus will have been a member of my family for 7 years.  He’s turned into a pretty good dog and we get along well.

In December of 2009, Zeus and I took a trip to Washington, DC.  It was a full day in the Jeep to get there and we were both tired upon arrival.

Zeus 3

Zeus took quite well to the king size bed – he looks pretty comfy.  I have taken him to baseball tournaments all over Ontario and into the US.  We’ve driven all over Ontario and Western New York – he decided that puking on trips wasn’t necessary along the way, so that’s a good thing.

A little over two years ago, I got a companion for Zeus (and myself).  Blondie.  Zeus is her best friend, no doubt about it.  She worships the ground that he walks on.  Zeus tolerates Blondie and even plays with her, but I think he still doesn’t really like it that I added another dog to our family.

Blondie & Zeus

One of those rare shots where he will actually lie down beside her.

More on Blondie some other time.

So, that is how Zeus came to join me.  As I said, it’s been a good 7 years (nearly 7 anyway) and Zeus has become a good dog.  I am glad he’s been there through thick and thin.  He joined me, likely against his will, in my move to Alberta and he’s changed a bit since he’s been here.  He has become much more accepting with other dogs since we’ve moved here – Blondie might have something to do with that though.  I am sure he enjoys it that the temperatures in Alberta don’t get anywhere near as hot as they do in S. Ontario.  The winters are colder, but I think he likes that too.

Anyway, if you are thinking of getting yourself a dog and if you have the time to dedicate to one, there is, I am sure, a shelter near you with many dogs looking for forever homes.  Maybe yours will be as good to you as Zeus has been to me.  Thanks Zeus.

My New Vehicle

Well, it is new to me anyway.  It is a used, 2008 Dodge Nitro with just over 80000 km on it.  I doubt that I will ever purchase a new vehicle again, they are too damn expensive and lose way too much of their value far too quickly.  I digress.

I wanted a 4×4 before the winter returns.  If you know Calgary (and Alberta), winter returns early and hits hard.  I didn’t really mind the previous vehicle that I had (a 2007 Dodge Caliber), but, it wasn’t a 4×4 and wasn’t really my “style” of vehicle.  I like riding up fairly high and living in Calgary, there are so many trucks and SUV’s on the road that if you are in a car, you can’t see around/over other vehicles very easy at all.

So, after I had looked around a bit and test drove some various SUV’s, I decided on this one.  I had never driven a red vehicle before so that is a first.

It has a leather interior so cleaning up the dog hair and paw prints will be a breeze.  I sort of wish the floor was leather as well, that would make clean-up VERY easy.

Zeus has a little hesitation in getting in this – it is much higher than the Caliber.  He needs to be encouraged a bit, then he makes the jump in.

The year long saga with my Jeep is coming to an end.  Well, essentially it has ended.  I may detail the happenings here at some point in the near future – guess we will see on that one.

For now, I will enjoy my new ride.

Big Brothers

As I am sure that I have logged, I decided to join Big Brothers shortly after I arrived in Calgary.  I had previously been involved when I lived in St. Catharines with sort of mixed results.

The first time I did this I think I was 18 years old so that would put this in the late 80’s.  My first “little” was a good kid but we had very little in common.  The only real activity that he wanted to do was fishing.  I don’t mind fishing, but, unless I am fishing from a boat, I could do without.  Well, since he liked to fish, we went fishing.  Now, in saying that he liked to fish, this means he liked sitting there with his line in the water but baiting the hook or getting the damn fish off once caught, well, that was my job.

I had an un-official little brother next – he was in the program but they didn’t match him and I coached him in fastball so that is how we met.  He played for me for two years and we stayed friends for a number of years until he went off to college and what not and we lost contact.

A few years ago, I was matched again with a kid from Pelham.  It didn’t work out well – he never wanted to go out or do anything, he wanted to stay around the house.  The match didn’t last long – perhaps part my fault and perhaps part his.

My “little” in Calgary was/is a good kid but I don’t think he was really interested in being matched up.  First of all, he lives with his Dad.  That made the match a little awkward from the start.  I almost felt as if the Dad was too lazy to do anything with his son, who knows.  The other issue was that this “little” was 14, nearly 15 when we were matched and really was a bit too old for the program.  He had more interest in hanging out with his friends than hanging out with an old guy such as myself.  After not having much contact with him for a few months, I spoke with the case manager at BBBS and we decided to end the match.

So, I am waiting for another little brother.  I have asked for someone a bit younger, doesn’t matter to me.  There are a lot of cool things to do in Calgary and the surrounding area and I know that they have a lot of kids waiting for matches.  I think that I do have a fair amount to offer so I really hope I get a good match.  I have coached baseball since my late teens and enjoy working with kids.  I think the only thing that kept me from becoming a teacher is that I didn’t enjoy going through university.  Oh well…

So, hopefully a match will occur in the next few weeks and I will take it from there.  Summer in Alberta is short and before we know it the snow will fly.  It will be nice to be able to get out and have some fun while it is still warm enough to be outside.

Boston Pizza & Baseball

I went an watched the MLB All-Star game last evening at Boston Pizza, well, sort of.

I mean I did go to Boston Pizza and the All-Star game was on.  However, I really didn’t watch a lot of it.  I sometimes tend to be chatty and last night was no exception.  I can’t even say that I really listened to the game either since the volume wasn’t on.

I left my vehicle at Franklin station and took the train west.  The new west LRT line opened this past December and to get to this Boston Pizza, it is perfect – the entrance from the station is at the back door of BP.  Can’t get much better than that.  The train ride took about 25 minutes and I am not sure that I could have driven that far that quickly.

Anyway, good food as always.  As for the game, I did see that the AL won the game 3-0 but I will admit, I likely watched less than an inning.  Since the on TV with the game on was to the left of me, it would have been sort of rude to ignore my companion and watch the game – I try not to be blatantly rude to people, honest, I do.

Anyway, we continued on a tradition of going to see this game together – we started out last year and had BP as company.  Well, for some reason he didn’t join us, could be something to do with the fact that it is a 4 hour flight.  Oh well – you were there in spirit.

We got our bill shortly before 10pm and I think we were both pretty well ready to call it a night then, but the waitress didn’t return with a debit machine.  So, around 11pm we decided to find her and pay our bill.  That was the only bad part of the service for the night.

The train going home was dead as I would expect after 11pm.  It’ll be a long day today, I didn’t get my pre-requisite 8 hours of beauty sleep.  I umpire tonight so I hope that the players are behaved, I am sure my patience will be in short supply.

Enjoy your day !!!

Calgary Flood, 2013

I have started an entry a couple of times in the last month and then have selected “Move to Trash” for one reason or another – I am feeling more lucky this time around.

Let’s see, what has happened in the last month.  Well…

June 20 – it started raining around noon, possibly earlier.  This lead to the worst flooding in Calgary, ever.  Apparently, there was a bad flood in 2005, that didn’t compare at all.

In the Banff and Canmore Alberta areas, they received more rain in a 24 hour period than they normally would in a month.  That, combined with a heavy snow pack that was melting turned the normal docile Bow River into a menace that took out low lying neighbourhoods along its path.

As bad as the flooding was in Calgary, it was worse downriver in High River where a majority of the town was wiped out and residents are only now, 3 weeks later getting to see their houses and businesses.

Through nothing other than dumb luck on my part, I was high and dry in one of the higher areas of the city.  I am sure that if I had found a place right beside the river, I would have thought, “wow, a view of the river” and would have taken it.  No flooding here at all, no backed up sewer – I was lucky.

The office that I work at is downtown, in the west end of downtown away from the river and away from the areas downtown that were flooded and closed for 5 days or so.  We didn’t even lose power in the office, it looks like we were on the opposite side of the street from where the power loss ended – I guess we must have been just on the other side of the grid.

A few of my co-workers were not so lucky.  One of them who is a friend of mine lived within 2 blocks of the river in one of the hardest hit areas of the city.  She and I visited her place on Saturday, June 22 and her basement suite was flooded, she lost a LOT.

The street out front of her place was partially dry but towards the end of it, towards Memorial Drive, it was completely under water.  The median that divides the street could not be seen at all and the signs were nearly under water.  It was something that I had only ever seen on TV or in movies.  I was reminded of the devastation in New Orleans after the hurricane destroyed that city.

In the three weeks since the flood, the city has done a LOT of works towards righting itself.  The Calgary Stampede is currently a go.  The downtown area was opened within a week and the south-west transit line that carries over 100,000 people per day was opened in less than 2 weeks – remarkable when you see what the damage to the area and infrastructure was.

As I said, I was one of the lucky ones, looking at all of this from the outside.

I will get some pictures together and will post shortly.  I am sure you’ve already seen a lot of this from the news which traveled around the  world but it is still something to see and take in.

Dry as the Sahara, Part 2

I passed my ITIL Foundations Certification course, thankfully.  I did not want to have to take that again or write the exam again.  Phew.

So, what does it mean that I am certified in ITIL Foundations?  No idea…  lol

I certainly hope that I will not be asked to get any further ITIL training, I am not sure that I could handle it.

On other front, umpiring is going well.  I am about 15 or so games into the season and I have yet to eject any coaches and/or players.  I am sure that by this time last season I had given a few the toss – I must be more tolerant this season.

I umpired a double header at Foothills Stadium on Saturday and during the first game, I got hit on the collar bone by a foul ball.  It might just above where my chest protector ended – a fluke shot really.  It hurt like hell, but, at least it didn’t break me.  It is still a little sore to the touch today, no bruise though at all.

I umpire again tonight.  Not sure where the diamond is but I know it is in the south-west of Calgary so I will have to fight rush hour traffic. Oh well, hopefully it will be a good night for ball.

Dry as the Sahara

I am referring to a 3 day training course that I took for work this week – ITIL Foundations.  It is “best practices” for IT and the way an IT Department should operate.  I am not exactly sure why I was selected for this training, I presume that my boss decided to torture me for some unknown reason.

As I mentioned, it was 3 days long.  Tons of information, terms and what not being thrown out at us, a jumble of diagrams being drawn on white-boards and flip charts and a seemingly unending PowerPoint presentation showing us slides of the various topics being discussed.  It was a bit overwhelming actually.

Anyway, it ended with a 40 question multiple choice exam/test.  I am not sure how I did.  I will get the results either tomorrow or Monday, so I am told.  I am not worried about it – nothing I can do to change the result now.  Apparently, the instructor doesn’t accept bribes.

Speaking of the instructor, he was pretty good actually.  Had he been a monotone type, it would have put us all asleep I am sure.

So, the end of the week is nearly here – this is a good thing.

I am umpiring four games this weekend – weather permitting of course.  Will be a good end to an otherwise dry week.

Niagara Bound? Just visiting…

So, I am contemplating at trip back to St. Catharines to correspond with our annual IT conference at work which is the first week of October.

The conference is Monday through Thursday and I think that we fly to Toronto on Monday and then fly-out on Thursday afternoon / evening.  I will have to see how much the cost of my flight will change if I leave Toronto either on the Thanksgiving Monday or the Tuesday – I presume that it might be cheaper to return to Calgary on Thanksgiving – I mean, who wants to fly somewhere on Thanksgiving, right?

So, presuming that the flight costs are ok (my employer pays for the flight, I may need to pay any difference if my return is more because I am returning on a different day), the only other consideration is Zeus and Blondie.  Putting them in the kennel that I take them to will cost me $80 per day for the two of them.  That will add up quickly.  I think that if they stay for 10 days, I save 20% so even if it would be a 9 day stay, guess what – they will be in for an extra night.

OK, after a quick check, it is only 10% off.  Dang.  Oh well, I guess I will have to see.  Anyway, details won’t be available until mid-August at the earliest I am sure.  I’ll figure it out then.

A wet vacation…

I was on vacation last week.  I decided to take the week off and since it started with Victoria Day, it only cost me 4 days in total which is nice.

Started out very well.  Great weather, sunny and nice temps.  Thursday and Friday were another story as it rained steady for 2.5 days.  Oh well, I was able to do what I was looking forward to doing – nothing.

I purchased a washer/dryer – had been looking around at a number of places and finally settled on the Brick – they had a pretty good price and the extended warranty was way cheaper than other places.  It wasn’t like the laundry room for the complex that I live in was far – it was about 90′ from my door, it was at times pretty gross in there though.  I guess when you have a bunch of people who don’t care doing their laundry, things go downhill sorta quickly.

I was supposed to umpire a bunch of games but the rain wiped those out – oh well.  I ended up doing one on Wednesday evening.  Bought myself a new pair of plate shoes as well – haven’t had the chance to wear them as yet.

So, back to work this week and next week I am in a 3 day training course.  It will be pretty dry, I am sure.

Weekend update

I umpired a double-header at Foothills stadium on Saturday.

The first game was a Midget AAA game, not too bad at all.  I was on the bases, don’t think I made any errors – we umped a pretty good game.  Essentially, we were like umpires should be, virtually unseen.

The second game was the first time that I umpired the University of Calgary team.  They played a team from Medicine Hat.  I think it was a high school club, based on the line-up card I was given.

It was a good game, UofC pulled out a win, just barely.  It wasn’t a superb game by any means but it was over quickly – 1:43 for 7 innings.

I have not done a University level game before.  Back in Niagara, I was not in the “in” group of umpires so I would never be given a Brock U game.  I am pretty sure though that if the University of Calgary ever played Brock, Brock would easily take the win.  Perhaps Calgary had an off day, not sure, I’ve never seen them play before.

After the game, as my partner and I were heading back to the dressing room, someone joined us – apparently, he’s another umpire.  You know what I really hate – when someone offers advice and tips on umpiring when it wasn’t asked for AND when I have no idea who you are.  Keep your opinions and ideas to yourself, if you don’t mind.  In other words, fuck off.

Anyway, it was a good afternoon of ball.

I was supposed to umpire yesterday, Mother’s Day, but the game was cancelled late Saturday for some reason.  I am not too sorry about that though.  It was going to be Senior Little League and wouldn’t (likely) have been that good.

So, another week has started and next week, I am on vacation for a week.  Not planning on going anywhere or really doing too much, just plan on taking it easy.

Enjoy your week.
