The season continues

I umpired a Senior Little League game last night.  I was on the bases.

I guess that I have gotten used to all-star and elite level baseball.  This was pure house league baseball at about the major Bantam level.  I am sure that the players love the game and were trying their best, but, wow.  It was likely one of the worst games that I have ever had to watch.

The play was a bit sloppy.  I know, it is still early in the season but the outfielders couldn’t handle fly balls, the infielders couldn’t handle ground balls.

The game ended in a mercy, mercifully.  Even though, it was 2 hours and 15 minutes of near torture.

I am back at the same diamond this Sunday with one of the same teams.  I am on the plate this time which will be better, I think.  I am sure that I will have to exaggerate the strike zone, otherwise we will never get out of there.

I think I am being punished for something.  I am not sure what, but something.

I appreciate being able to coach at an all-star and elite level over the years.  I guess I also appreciate being able to umpire those games as well.  I suppose if it weren’t for house league, we wouldn’t have all-star and elite ball, so, thanks to those players too.

Let’s play ball.  🙂

Play Ball

I opened the 2013 baseball season by umpiring a triple header on Saturday.  I did two plates followed by a base.  Not bad ball, a tad windy though.

The games were in Okotoks, starting at 11am and we finished up at 7:30pm so it was a pretty long day.  My legs were sore.  I am not used to getting into the strike zone after spending a winter doing pretty well nothing.  My feet were also sore, I am not used to standing all day.  I must be getting old.

So, I didn’t go to the level 3 clinic this year, I won’t be able to umpire in the Provincial Championships, that’s ok with me.  I submitted my availability for the entire summer.  Basically, I am available Wednesday nights (seeing as I work from home on Wednesday’s) and either Saturday or Sunday.  I don’t want to leave Blondie in her crate all day when I am at work then come home for a few minutes and leave her again all evening – not fair to the dog and I don’t trust her out of the crate, she is still a bit destructive.

So, if I do 2 or 3 games a week, that will give me some extra spending money and something to do.  I do plan on going back into coaching at some point, not sure when though.  I coached for a long time, many summers and I want a break from it for now.  I still haven’t won that elusive Provincial Championship so at some point, I will have to come back and go for that again.  For now, I will entertain myself with umpiring.

I have several games scheduled in the coming weeks so that will be good.  I hope that the weather will warm up a bit as well – not very baseball like out there right now.

Where is Spring?

Well, I still don’t seem to have gotten the “blogging” bug back.  I used to make a few entries a week, at least.  Now, I am lucky if I make a blog entry a month, or every couple of months.

Perhaps one of the reasons is that my laptop is down.  When I used to have it on and surfing, etc., it was very easy to just make a quick entry, even if I really hadn’t done all that much.  I don’t turn my computer on all that often – today is one of those rare days.

Nothing much new on this front.  I finally did my taxes and they are ready to go in. I am getting a little over $3000 back which will be nice.  Most of that is from my moving expenses.  I changed my banking information so I am not going to efile the return, I will do it the old fashioned way and will mail it in.  I don’t really want to jump through the hoops to have work efile it anyway.

Spring is trying to arrive in Calgary, I think.  We had about 5″ of snow last Sunday and could possibly get some more tomorrow – that will be April 21.  Sort of late for snow, in my opinion, BUT, it is Calgary.

I am also heading for brunch tomorrow, found a great sounding place online and decided to try it out last weekend.  Well, it was so good I am heading back.  It is called Smuggler’s Inn.  I’d suggest the brunch on the weekend for sure.  I’d like to try it for dinner sometime as well.

As for today, no plans.  I am going to take it easy.

Calgary Roughnecks

So, my company is having a mid-season event this weekend and that is going to the Calgary Roughnecks (NLL) game at the Saddledome on Saturday.  I have not been to a lacrosse game in Calgary as yet, I have seen the team that used to play in Ottawa a few times, it is fast paced and a pretty violent sport.  From what I gather, I think the only thing that isn’t allow is head contact, everything else seems to be legal.  Anyway, it is nice that we have the opportunity to go and even better that the cost is being picked up.

I had a comment posted to me on FB about the lack of posts in 2013 on my blog.  I guess that I have not had a heck of a lot to say.  I know that I have started several posts and then have hit “Move to Trash” and scrapped them before publishing.  Anyway, for anyone who actually reads and enjoys what I sometimes write, well, I am sorry for the lack of posts.  I can’t make any promises because they will likely be broken.  BTW, I dedicate this entry to EP.

Really though, who cares what I say anyway?

Have a good weekend all 🙂

It’s March 12th

I haven’t as yet posted anything this year.

Just to let anyone who happens to read my blog or if they happen to care, I am not dead.  This is probably a good thing.

So, no posts – what’s been going on?  Well, not a heck of a lot really.  I tend to hibernate in the winter.  This was my first winter in Alberta and it wasn’t all that bad really.  We had a stretch of about a week where it was pretty cold, daytime highs of -22 or so but it didn’t actually feel that cold.  We have had snow on the ground for most of the winter, heck, we’ve had snow on the ground since a week before Halloween.  All in all though, it has been pretty good.

A big change from a winter in Southern Ontario is that we see the sun, almost daily.  That is nice.  It is sunny almost all the time.

I got myself another vehicle.  It is a 2007 Dodge Caliber.  Nice vehicle, I am enjoying having a car again.  I am not driving into work though, parking downtown is too expensive.  I drive to one of the park n’ ride lots and take the train from there.

Anyway, you are now up to date.  It really has been a quiet winter.  I am sure things will pick up in the Spring which is just over a week away.

Until next time.  🙂

2012 in Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 3,200 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 5 years to get that many views.

Merry Christmas, or Humbug…

Whichever you’d prefer I guess.

This is my first Christmas in Calgary.  It looks a lot like Christmas outside, it is cold (-23C when I write this at 9:30am) and there is snow on the ground and in the trees.  A little cold for my tastes, but I can handle it.  I have already been out with the dogs for a cold walk.

I will miss not going to J&D’s place for the usual festivities.  I am not sure who will take care of doing the potatoes, that has been my job for years.  I guess no potatoes for them this year.

I plan on having a relaxing day – look, I even had a chance to make a blog entry.  🙂

Perhaps my New Years resolution will be to make entries more often – we will see.  We all know how successful resolutions are.

At any rate, have a good Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Take care.

My lack of posts

Well, what can I say?  I have not posted a lot lately, this is true.

My home laptop died on me.  I am not 100% sure what is wrong with it.  The battery hasn’t held a charge for sometime so it always had to be plugged in – not a big issue.  All of the sudden, it won’t even power on.  This is odd seeing as it should work just plugged in without the battery inserted.  So, this is one of the reasons that I haven’t posted.

I do have another computer that I can use.  I turn it on occasionally.  Most of what I need to do online I have either used my Android or my iPad.  I could post entries from either of those devices, but it isn’t quite as convenient.  Typing on an iPad is a PITA to say the least (that is Pain In The Ass in case you didn’t recognize that).  Typing anything too long on the Android isn’t that easy either.

Also, I really haven’t been doing anything fun and exciting.  I tend to hibernate in the winter and even though it is still Fall, it feels like Winter.

So, to my faithful readers, you have nothing to put you to sleep at night.  For that, I apologize and I will try to post more regularly, even if I have nothing to say.

Winter & Hockey

Well, it would appear that winter settles into Alberta a little earlier than what I am used to.  A week ago, we received an early winter storm – lots of fun.

I guess we got 6″, maybe more.  Rather cold temperatures, for this time of year anyway.  It has been between -9 and -4 for the last week.  It hasn’t been windy, so that’s good.

There weren’t too many plows that I saw in Calgary.  The side streets didn’t get cleared at all but they are clear now, it warmed to 6C yesterday, that was a nice change – we saw the sun as well.

It could be a very cold Halloween on Wednesday.  Well, cold by Southern Ontario standards anyway.

I went to my first Hit Men hockey game on Friday night.  It was an interesting game – it ended 10-1 for the visitors, I don’t think I have ever seen such a high scoring game before.  It was all right though – I have never been in the Saddledome before so that was cool.  Hopefully the next time I am there for hockey, it will be a bit closer of a game.

I am hoping that the storm that is hitting the East coast isn’t as bad a predicted – be safe.

No Posts? What’s going on?

Not too much really.  No, I have not posted in a bit, almost a month actually.

My trip to Ontario was good.  It was nice seeing friends and family, even if it was only for a short period of time.  The conference was good – some of it was a bit dry but that was expected I am sure.  It was nice meeting people that I deal with on a daily (or weekly, whatever) basis.

Zeus and Blondie seemed to do well at the pet resort that I put them in.  I got back on Tuesday evening and picked them up first thing Wednesday morning – they were happy to see me.

Nothing else much going on really – same old…

I will let you know if something exciting happens with me…  🙂
