Senior Ball

I umpired a double-header yesterday just a few minutes from my house, it was senior ball.

I was a little apprehensive about umpiring at that level based on the experience in Niagara – the Senior league there is full of a bunch of immature hooligans.

Well, not the case in Calgary, at least with the two teams that I saw on Sunday morning.

The quality of the ball was high.  The players were mature, they actually acted their age, they didn’t complain on every called strike and every out call – no one came close to being warned, never mind ejected.

I guess the senior players, and I don’t mean all of them (except for the Fort Erie team, there, I DO mean all of them) are just a little immature, thinking that they are Major League players who are above this league – yeah right, we’ll go with that.

So, in short, there’s another reason I like Calgary.

Off-Roading

I joined the Calgary Off-Road Club on Friday and today went out about an hour south west of Calgary and did some off-roading.

The line of Jeeps waiting to hit the trails

That’s the line of Jeeps waiting to hit the trails.  We stopped at various points to pick up garbage.  There were our dogs in total, Zeus and Blondie had a great time running all over and Zeus was even friendly with the other dogs.

Blondie had a great time with her new friend, Joey.  He’s a pitbull and the friendliest dog that I have ever met.  Blondie got a little dirty, Zeus kept himself much cleaner.  I should take a picture of the inside of my Jeep – waiting for it to dry out so that I can vacuum it out.

I will definitely be going back out with this group.

I didn’t even get that dirty and never got stuck – had an awesome time !!!

More Umpiring

I was sort of hoping that the rain that we had yesterday would wash my baseball game out – it didn’t.  The diamond was a little wet but in pretty good condition considering the amount of rain we’ve had in the last few days.

I was umpiring the Giants, again.  It was my 3rd game in a row with them and I was behind the plate, again.  I see, looking forward on the schedule that I am umpiring them again, behind the plate, again, next Thursday.  I have enquired with the scheduler to see if I can switch with my partner to take the bases for that game – I don’t think it is fair for the team to have me behind the plate in 4 consecutive home games.  If he says no then I think I will give the game up.

Anyway, the first base coach, a young guy complained about a called 3rd strike that may have been outside of the strike zone – who knows, I do miss the occasional call.  I warned him and he continued and was ejected.  He left without any incident and the game continued.

It was an odd game.  The visitors broke out in the top of the 1st with 6 runs on a shaky pitcher who couldn’t find the strike zone.  I don’t think I was squeezing him, not sure what he might say.  Anyway, it ended up with the home team winning 15-11 or something like that.  The pitching is shaky and the defence, at times, non-existent.  Oh well – I have coached worse.

I am enjoying umpiring, I would like to get a few more base games into the mix though.  I am typically being scheduled for about 3 games per week which is fine.  Not taking up too much of my time at least.

Umpiring

I am scheduled to umpire tonight, it’s a 9 inning game in SW Calgary, about 25 minutes from my place.

It was raining pretty well all night and into this morning, stopped somewhere around noon.

I was sort of hoping that the game would be rained out so I could relax tonight, do some laundry, whatever.

I called the umpire hotline number – there are 3 games scheduled in Calgary tonight.  Two of the three are cancelled, mine isn’t.  Figures…

I just hope that I don’t drive all the way there and then discover that the diamond isn’t playable.

It’s cold, but at least I have an umpire jacket now.  Presuming that the diamond and field aren’t too wet, it should be a good night for ball.

Play Ball !!!

Look, advanced options…

OK, I’ve been blogging for quite some time now, since November 2009 I think it is.  I have never, up to this point, modified the “look” of my blog.  I only moved it to Word Press last summer mind you, but in those 9 or 10 months, I haven’t played around with the format of the blog, etc.

So, I was looking through the options and low and behold, look at all the interesting stuff that I can do.

I made a few changes to the “side bar” area of the blog. For instance, I moved the admin area to the top – this is for my benefit.  If I need to log in again for some reason, it is right there.  I made more of the recent entries visable to visitors and, believe it or not, I actually get quite a few people visiting the blog.  I am not sure if they read many entries but occasionally I get a comment about something that I have written.  When I started the blog, I wasn’t sure what the point of it was.  To this day, I am still not sure what the point is, but it is sort of cool to look back and see what I have been doing with myself.  I don’t post some details of my days – I want to keep the blog mostly family friendly.  🙂

Beyond the recent entries, the archive and category views have been condensed into a pull down list.  Saves some space.  After that I have added a calendar.  By the looks of it, most of the days (in May anyway) have entries.  I have been a busy blogger.  I then have my 10 most recent Tweets.  I typically use Twitter to share news and information and to rant and rave.  I follow 175 or so people so I rarely look at all the tweets, I wouldn’t have the time.  I occasionally get a reply or a re-tweet which is cool.  I then give the option of following my blog – if you do this, you’ll get an email every time I make an entry.  Apparently, there are 4 people following me via email updates – not sure if I can see who they are.

So, that’s what I did to make the blog experience better – what’s been going on in my life?

Well, I sent an email out yesterday to all of the umpires in the area to see if anyone had any used equipment for sale.  I got a few replies which was nice.  As I was driving home last night, I received a phone call from one guy who had recently purchased new equipment and was offering his old stuff to me.  I met him at his work last night.  He’s a mechanic so that is good to know – knowing a mechanic is always nice.

He ended up giving me 2 chest protectors, a pair of shin pads, a mask, 3 shirts and a jacket.  The best part, he wouldn’t accept any cash for it.  Nice – thank you very much.

I sold my HTC Desire HD.  I upgraded to the Samsung Note and I love that phone.  The Desire was a good phone but it would occasionally crash when using the GPS and voice dialer at the same time and then I would have to reboot the darn thing which would mean pulling over, taking off the Otter Box and then waiting for it to reboot which would be at least 5 minutes before it was good to go.  The new phone is thinner but has a larger display.  It is like carrying a small tablet with me – it is an awesome phone though.  I plan to purchase another Otter Box for it in the next couple of weeks.

Umpiring tonight, weather permitting.  I also finally received a reply from the Supervisor of Umpires for Baseball Alberta.  I am good to go for the 2012 season.

Until next time…

What to blog about?

Well, I have been making nearly daily entries in my blog for the last while, not sure what I can/will write about tonight.

It was a relaxing evening tonight.  Drove home through some of the worst thunderstorms that I have ever seen.  Heavy rain, thunder, lightning and hail – nice weather for the middle of May.

The dogs go rather wet on their walk as they were caught in a downpour.  Zeus hates getting wet, Blondie not so much.  I hate the smell of wet dog though, they need to go to the groomers.

Stopped by the Superstore tonight – it is like walking into another world there are so many “foreigners” there.  India, Japan?  Not sure.  Oh well, everyone is friendly anyway.

Watching the Phoenix vs. Los Angeles game tonight on CBC.  It is currently the start of the 3rd period and it is tied 3-3.  I have no love for ANY team out of LA so I am going for Phoenix.  They have their work cut out for them though, they have to win 4 straight.  Well, one game at a time – it can happen.

I am, of course, a Flames fan. They haven’t been in the playoffs for some time – 2004 I believe it was, when they were in the Stanley Cup final.  They won that cup, the refs fucked up the call – it was over the line.  I suppose, depending on the reply you saw it looked like it went over the line and the next view, it didn’t.  Oh well…

Short week at work this week and it is zipping by.  Shitty weather called for though, all week.  It’s the damn tree huggers in BC sending us this crappy weather.  Mind you, we send it further east so my friends in Ontario can enjoy it this coming weekend.

Roomies

I decided to advertise a room for rent last week.  Wasn’t sure if I would get any responses and if I did, I wasn’t sure if I would find someone who I could live with.

My first room-mate was very odd.  I moved so that I could get away from him.  His mother was a nut (as it turned out) so I am not surprised that he was as well.  That convinced me not to have another roomie.

In my last place in St. Catharines, there was a separate apartment in the basement.  The rent of the place was high so I figured $650 coming in each month would really help – it did.

The guy that ended up renting it was, to say the least, odd.  He didn’t really believe in cleaning up, washing (himself nor his clothes) and he was just plain weird.  He’d wear headphones (thankfully) but he’d sing to himself and bop away – very strange…  Wasn’t much of a conservationist but that’s OK.  His rent was paid on time (by the Government of Ontario – he was on long term disability – yeah, sure) so that was good for me.  Anyway, I gave him notice that he had to vacate at the end of May which is quickly approaching.  I hope his place has been cleaned so that someone doesn’t have to do tons of work. As far as I am aware, the house hasn’t been re-rented as yet.

Anyway, I received a call from a prospective renter when I was registering my vehicle in Alberta so I asked him to call back.  He did and came right over to look at the place.  We did the dime tour and he said he wanted to look at the basement.  It’s not a bad basement, unfinished but not bad.  He decided to set up shop down there.  It is dark and a bit cold for my tastes, but he seems happy and is a good guy.

I am charging $500 per month in rent so that will really help me out.  I plan on banking that away so that in 2 years I will have a decent down payment for my own place.  I still have 2 bedrooms open so I may look at renting one of those – not sure on that one though – I will have to see what my current roomie thinks, one bathroom with 3 guys might be tough.

So, I think all will be OK this time around – time will tell.

The Poker Gods

Played Texas Hold’em last evening.  There were 7 of us.  We started at around 8pm as people were rather late in showing up.

I won a couple of close hands early and quickly tripled my chip stack to about 750,000.  I got lucky on a few hands, the river card was my friend for most of the evening.

It was a $10 buy in with a first re-buy (and a quarter million in new chips) at $10 and additional re-buys at $20 each.  After an hour or so, I had well over a million and a half and was the chip leader, by far.

I sat back and played a patient style while I watched others eliminate each other over the course of the evening – I bet when I had something decent while the blinds were still low.  Some of the betting wasn’t too smart, they seemed to be pretty easy going when it came to losing $40 or $50 of their “real” money.  I am not so easy going when it comes to someone taking my funds.

In around 12:30 in the morning, we were down to two.  I had, I would guess, about 10-15 times his chip stack.  He was getting killed by the blinds which, considering how long we played, were still pretty low at $25000 and $50000.  I was betting large on any hand that was good and he was folding – if he tried to trap me (or bluff) and I had nothing, I didn’t take the bait.

After a half hour of heads up play, I decided enough was enough and offered him $50 to resign.  He accepted and I walked away with $190, up $180 for the evening.  Not a bad deal for 6 hours of entertainment.

They play every 4-6 weeks so I will be going back – presuming that I am invited back of course…  Who wants to see the new guy win?  LOL

Ouch – just a bit

I brought the Jeep into Courtesy Chrysler yesterday at 7am.  Got the shuttle ride back home and did some stuff around the house, you know, domestic chores.

I hadn’t heard from them by 10:30 or so, so I called them.  They had only just started on my Jeep.

Ummm, why did they only start on my Jeep at 10:30 if I brought it to them at 7am?  Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of bringing it in early?  Perhaps I did that so that I would have it back early?  Oh well.

I got a call around 11:30 or so – the inspection was done but it needed one safety item – something to do with steering.  The advisor tried to explain it to me and I sort of understood but if I was to translate it here, I would get it all wrong.

Long story short, the total bill, including the safety was $479.  Dang…  Oh well, guess I am not going to Edmonton this weekend.

So, I pick up the Jeep (after a lost shuttle driver finally finds my place) and go to the vehicle registration office.  The guy behind the counter starts to fill in the paperwork and I show him the insurance certificate – it shows that the policy doesn’t come into effect until the 16th of June – awesome.  The email that I received from them shows the same thing.

I call the insurance company and they email me a new certificate.

I go back in and switch the plates over to Alberta, pay my fee and physically switch the plates.  Well, not plates as I only get one – the rear plate.  The front of the Jeep looks naked…

For some odd reason, I renew my plate sticker every April but once I do the drivers license, it renews in August.  I suppose it is nice spreading out the payments but it does mean I have to visit twice a year.

I forgot to switch my Health Card but my Ontario one is good for 3 months.  That will be a job for another day.

Anyway, I feel more Albertan now with my Wild Rose Country plate and naked Jeep front.  All I need now is a cowboy hat (and my license, health card and who the heck knows what else)…
