Today’s Rant – Baseball

I will admit, I used to be a young, stupid baseball coach.  I used to get to into an umpires face because I didn’t like his/her call.  I don’t do that any longer, not unless I really think that an umpire is out to screw one of my players, my team or myself and I doubt that this actually happens very much at all.

There is an umpire in Niagara who thinks that he’s God’s gift to umpiring – DL are his initials.  He’s not a bad umpire, knows all of the rules and what not, quite likely at least as well as I do and likely better than I do.  The only issue with him is that in every game, at least once, he makes his mark on that game.  He either blows a call and one can only assume is isn’t just a bad call, he’s doing it because he can.  I am sure he’d deny it and I am also sure that every coach that has ever had him as an umpire would agree with me.

I don’t think I am like that.  I love baseball, I love coaching and I don’t mind umpiring. I don’t love it because of idiot coaches and players.  A lot of them think it is ALL about them.  It’s not – baseball is a team sport, sure, there are individual accomplishments but in general, you win as a team or you lose as a team.  If an umpire is doing a good job, he or she should remain “unseen” on the field.

Last night, I unfortunately wasn’t “unseen” because of what I would describe immature, bratty, uncontrolled players from one of the teams that I had last night.  The coaching staff of that particular team should be ashamed of themselves – if I EVER let my players get away with the chirping that those players did last night, I would retire as a coach.  I never let my players chirp an umpire, ever.  If I thought that something was bad enough that it needed to be discussed with an umpire, I would ask for time and go and speak with him or her.  The players, and not all of them, were idiots.  I am not sure what level of baseball it was, but those players will NOT get a scholarship, they will NOT get recruited.  They don’t have the maturity to play ball at a higher level and this, I can guarantee.

I have been involved with baseball since the early 1990’s, before those players were born.  I am not the be all and end all in baseball and I know that I have a LOT to learn but I have also seen a lot.  I have been to clinics and I have been to umpiring courses as well.  I am a Level 2 certified coach for Baseball Canada and have been a certified Level 2 umpire for about 10 years.

I have spoke with recruiters from colleges and universities both in the US and in Canada.  I have been told what they look for.  I have spoken to Major League Baseball scouts from various teams.  I know what they look for.

What they aren’t looking for is the type of player that I saw last night.

All I have to add is this:  To the players and coaching staff of the one team from last evening, you all need to grow up and learn what baseball is all about.

Alberta license & NEW, cheaper insurance

My Alberta drivers license arrived today.  The picture doesn’t look too bad actually.  Well, how could it look bad considering the subject material?  So, now I have something more than a little piece of paper that says I can drive.

I went to a Lunch & Learn session last Wednesday from a local insurance company.  I figured that I would go, even though I had just started a new policy with TD Insurance.  Well, my policy was going to be nearly $400 less than with TD – awesome.

I couldn’t care less about being loyal to a large insurance company.  Give me a good rate and I will stay.  If I can save more than $10-$20 per month in my insurance costs and you don’t match it then I am out of here.  I don’t really care about customer service, etc., I have never made a claim.  I only have insurance because it is mandatory.

So, anyway, I have filled in the needed paper work and have submitted the forms.  My new policy will arrive sometime today and then I will cancel the TD Insurance.  Hopefully it doesn’t take too long for them to process my refund seeing as I paid them upfront.

I also got tenant insurance which is good – really, it isn’t necessary, but, with being so far away from family, if my place burned to the ground, it would be VERY tough to get back on my feet.  I am sure that won’t happen, but for around $200 per year, the peace of mind is nice.

Anyway, I am becoming more Albertan by the day.  Friday, I will apply for my health card, before my Ontario one expires.  Not sorry to see any of that stuff go – goodbye Ontario, good luck.

A Boring Saturday

Well, I had originally planned on heading to Salmon Arm, BC this weekend and further on to Kelowna, BC on Sunday then home.

Well, a few things derailed that.  The person that wanted a lift to Kelowna had to back out.  That would have doubled my expenses.  The weather in BC has been awful all weekend, heavy rainfall warnings, etc.  That makes fishing pretty miserable.

Tonight, I was planning on heading to Okotoks to watch a Dawgs game and it was delayed because of weather but apparently will start around 8pm.  Well, I am pretty sure it would be rained out anyway and it is cold tonight, under 10C so watch baseball in that isn’t too much fun.

So, it’s a Saturday night and I am sitting at home watching what might be the final hockey game of the year.  I am hoping that the Devils can win 4 straight and steal the cup away from LA – I hate teams from LA.

So, at any rate, a relaxing weekend every once in a while is good for you I guess.  Maybe I will catch the flea market tomorrow morning – that will make for a good Sunday.

Back to it on Monday for a shortened week and I am off on Friday afternoon.

Enjoy your weekend.

Red Deer Bound

I am off to Red Deer tomorrow for work.  I think I may have mentioned that I support offices  (as a backup) other than Calgary.  They would include Red Deer, Lethbridge and Edmonton.  I also will be supporting the Grand Prairie office which is in the middle of nowhere – well, the north-west of nowhere.

I’m looking forward to the drive tomorrow, just about 2 hours or so I guess.  I will meet staff, take some notes, etc.  I get paid mileage and lunch so it is a pretty good deal I guess. I am sure that I will use most of a tank of gas getting to Red Deer and back to Calgary, guess I will see.

I have never been, it’ll be nice to see another city in this awesome province.

First post from Windows 8

I installed the WordPress app – looks good.  Not quite what I am used to but not bad.

I don’t have some (any) of the features that I have when using the web interface, but perhaps it will get improved as Windows 8 gets more widely used.

OK, back to work I go…

Windows 8

I downloaded the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.  I figured that I would be able to burn an ISO and install it on my system that is currently running Ubuntu, but, the installer isn’t an image and I am not sure if you can download an ISO or not, so, I installed it on my primary laptop.

It took about an hour or so to install so not too bad.

A few apps weren’t compatible, not surprising there.  It is running very well – the laptop is 3.5 to 4 years old, 4BG memory, 3.6GhZ processor.

I am impressed with the OS.  Microsoft has broken the mold with this one, that’s for sure.  I have never used a Windows phone but I have seen commercials and this has the same look and feel.  The “Start” menu, as they are calling it, is nothing like the Start menu that you will be used to in Windows 95 through to Windows 7.  It takes up the entire screen.  There is no Start button in the lower left hand corner either, to access it, you hit the Windows key on your keyboard – there are a few other ways to access it as well.

You can see the regular desktop and run apps from it, etc., but the Start menu desktop has access to just about everything that you might want – except a clock.  There doesn’t even appear to be a clock app anywhere, odd.  I like being able to glance at a part of my screen and see what time it is or what the date is.  Not a biggie.

It performs well.  It integrates into all of your social media accounts with ease. The built in mail program can be configured with all of your mail accounts, regardless of who they are with.

It imported all of my iTunes music into its own player and downloaded all of the cover art, something that I seem to have problems with in iTunes.

If someone on Facebook or MSN messages you, the message appears in its own interface, called, you guessed it, Messaging.

Thus far, I am VERY impressed.  Guess I will see how it goes over the next few weeks and months.  Not sure when it expires.

I could not install it on the PC that I am writing this entry on.  It is a Zeon based processor, only 2GB memory though.  Windows 8 reported that the processor wasn’t compatible.  I am currently running Windows XP on it.

All in all, at this point I give it a 9 out of 10.  Time will tell.

Surprise Evaluation

I umpired last night at Optimist Park in South West Calgary last night, it was AA 15-16 year olds, so, Bantam/Midget mixed – Babe Ruth baseball.

Not a bad game at all actually.  Pitching on both sides was pretty good, solid defense – quite entertaining.

After the game, as I was walking off of the field, a guy approached and introduced himself, no idea now what his name was – actually, I think I forgot his name about 10 seconds after he said it, I am bad that way.

It turned out that he was evaluating our game.  OK, that’s fine, wish I had known I was being evaluated.  I would have eliminated some of the “lazy” things that I do when I umpire.

The evaluation was pretty good, he didn’t mention anything that I didn’t already know, it is just bad habits that I have and am too stubborn to eliminate.  I will have to work on them, for sure.

So, today off from umping, double header tomorrow afternoon and a single game on Sunday.

I have a meeting tomorrow morning with the South West Calgary Conservatives.

I have been experimenting with letting Blondie out of her crate while I am at work the last few days.  Thus far, she has been fine and I hope it stays that way.  I am sure she likes having the freedom to roam around the house.  I will continue to let her have the run of the house until such a time that she does something “bad”.  Maybe I will get lucky and she won’t ever chew on my furniture or anything else.  Guess we will see.

Enjoy your weekend.

A Change of the blog…

I clicked on an ad in my blog and paid $18 a year to have a domain name again – not a bad price @ $1.50 per month.

The blog can now be accessed at:

http://kdarcy21.com

and my email is kevin@kdarcy21.com.

Not a huge change, but it’s a bit cooler perhaps.  I configured the domain name through Google as well which is VERY cool.  My kdarcy21@gmail.com address will always remain, those emails are now forwarded to my new address.  I was able to create a bunch of cool stuff.  I also have the ability to create another 9 accounts.

So, in short – if you have ever dreamed of having an @kdarcy21.com email address, let me know and maybe, just maybe, I will set it up for you.  🙂
