Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I have a few things to be thankful for.

I am thankful for having a job that I thoroughly enjoy.  I am thankful that I was able to find a place in Calgary to rent that will accept two dogs. I am thankful for friends and family that I don’t see too often now that make time to catch up when I am able to visit.  I am thankful to be healthy and happy in my life in Alberta.  I am thankful to have enough money to pay for the things that I need and some of the things that I want.

Hopefully, you will be able to spend some time today with your family and think about what you might be thankful for as well.

Have a good day and enjoy.

Vacation Time

I really don’t go on exotic vacations.  I don’t particularly care for the heat and humidity of a tropical island and I am not a huge fan of sand so laying on a beach is not my idea of a good time.  My sister has tried, unsuccessfully, for years, to get me to go to Cuba with her and her husband.  No interest.  At all.

I suppose if I did go I would just sit under an umbrella drinking all day and all night.  I suppose that wouldn’t be too bad.

Speaking of drinking all day and all night, I have not had a day where I have not had a drink in the last week.  I guess it takes quantities of alcohol to keep me going on my return trips to Ontario.  Amaretto is my drink of choice.  My buddies back in the day tried to get me to drink beer but they were not successful in their attempts.  I do not like it.  At all.  I will drink pretty much anything else that is offered.  I can go for a bottle or two of wine, red, white, doesn’t matter.  I don’t really care for hard stuff, scotch, vodka, etc., but when mixed, they aren’t too bad.

I don’t drink all that much.  I did enough of that when I was a teen and in my early 20’s to last a lifetime.  I had a fairly good job when I was in high school and spent a lot of that money down at the Port Mansion in Port Dalhousie.  Oh well, a friend worked there so I guess I helped put him through school.

Anyway, back to vacations – I seem to have gotten side-tracked there.

I am now on vacation.  I don’t go back into the office for another week still and it seems that I have already been off for a week because of the conference. My vacation for this year is spending a weekend back in St. Catharines for Thanksgiving.  I have visited some of my favourite restaurants, The Mandarin, Duff’s Pizzeria, today we are heading to what we call “The Greasy Spoon” which is actually Golden Grill. I caught a Brock Badgers baseball game and they came back for the win.  All in all, it is pretty relaxing actually.

Today, I am making my nearly world famous Crock-Pot roast for dinner – it is Crock-Potting away as I type this.  Thanksgiving dinner will be tomorrow – turkey and all the fixings.  I think we might actually catch a movie which is a rare event for me to be sure.

Zeus and Blondie are in their new Pet Resort back in Calgary.  I will pick them up on Wednesday morning.

Not a bad week off at all.

That was a good conference

Well, the conference up in Collingwood was a good one.  Excellent rooms, awesome food and really good presentations, with the odd exception of course.

We did some fun activities as well.  Our team building event on Tuesday afternoon was some sort of scavenger hunt – my team came in second place.  Not bad, out of 10 teams as well and we only lost by 1 point.

On Tuesday night I joined a bunch of co-workers for some drinks in one of the local bars in the Blue Mountain Village.  Good times around for sure.  While we were bar hopping, I received a notification that the Calgary office was down.  I didn’t take much note because this will happen from time to time and typically, it will be back up within minutes.

Well, not this time apparently.  About an hour later, I received a second alert.  So, I did a check to ensure that the power was still on and it was – so that is a good sign.  Nothing else that I can really physically check, I am over 3000km away.  So, it is about 11:30pm Eastern so I decided to call one of the office admin people to see if she’d be able to go into the office early the next day, presuming that the issue wasn’t resolved over night.  No problem there, she’d be in by 5:30am or so.

I started work at 6:30am and the first thing I checked was the Calgary office status – still down.  Not good.  Telus had not informed us that it was a Telus issue, so something else was going on.

RD got in and I had her do some testing.  Looks like the main switch in our server room has failed.  The switch essentially connects all of the computers in the office to the servers and the internet.  So, we place a service call with Avaya and they will ship us a new switch – it will arrive sometime later that evening.  I contact the IT guy up in Edmonton, he didn’t attend the conference and let him know that he needs to get to Calgary as soon as he can.

Well, long story a bit shorter (perhaps), he’s able to get everyone in the office back up and running – he temporarily moves connections on the 6th floor to the two other switches and then moves the now empty switch back to 5.  The office admin person meets the courier at 11:30pm to receive the new switch.

My co-worker in the office was in today – I am on vacation.  The replacement switch can’t be connected, the port that we need to connect to is damaged.  They will be shipping yet another switch.  The office is still good, so that isn’t too bad.

The replacement switch will now be delivered on Tuesday morning.  I won’t be back in the office until the following week, not even back in Alberta until Tuesday evening so I won’t be doing anything further on it.

The rest of the conference was good.  The presentations, for the most part, were very informative and we learned a thing or two.  The team building activity was great.  Did I mention the zip-line or the roller coaster?

We wrapped things up on Thursday afternoon and made a mostly uneventful trip back to the airport in Toronto.  I figured that I was going to  be taking a taxi from the airport to my Aunt’s place and then we were going out for a family dinner.  Well, the driver offered to take me pretty well to my Aunt’s place, it was on his way back to his garage.  Thank you – saved me about $60 in a taxi fare.

Dinner was good – Red Lobster.  Had a good time sort of visiting with the family and we returned to Niagara.  I have a few days to get in touch with friends and do some hanging out.  Should be a good couple of days.

I called the Pet Resort where Zeus and Blondie are staying – I am told that both dogs are enjoying themselves.  I am looking forward to picking them up on Wednesday morning.  Their stay will last 10 days which is the longest, by far, that I have left them – I will be happy to see them and I am sure they will be happy to see me.

A few days after I get them, I am taking them back as I have to provide support for a conference in Banff and am staying over night.  What can ya do, that is the price of working I guess.

Anyway, I plan on enjoying myself for the rest of my stay in Ontario but am looking forward to getting back into the routine in Alberta.

Have fun, I am sure I will.

Back in Ontario

Woke up at 3:45am yesterday to head to the airport for a flight to Toronto.  A little early for my tastes, but just about the regular time that I have been waking up recently for some odd, unknown reason.

I had pre-arranged a cab to pick me up at 5am.  It was there a bit early, so off to the airport I went.

Check-in was a snap.  For some reason though, the machine would not spit out luggage tags at me so I had to wait in lineup number 1 to check my bag.  I wasn’t sure if it would be over-weight or not, it felt pretty damn heavy but it was only (yes, only) 20kg.  I was going to be away from home for 10 days, so, that works out to 2kg per day.  Not too bad, right?

I guess it took about 15-20 minutes to make it though that line.  Now, off to security.  Another 20 minutes or so and I am through – all in all, not a bad experience really.

At this point, it is about 6am and my flight is not boarding until 6:35, scheduled to leave at 7am.  For some reason, I don’t think that I have ever been on a flight that has boarded nor left on time.  Yesterday was an exception.

In the air by 7:10 or so and off to Toronto.  A fairly uneventful flight, a little turbulence when we were coming into Toronto, but otherwise pretty smooth and it seemed pretty quick.  It is nice that they offer TV on flights now so that helped to kill some time.

Arrived in Toronto around 12:35pm (Eastern).  Grabbed a quick lunch and waited for our shuttle to Collingwood for my conference.

I have been all over the province in my 40 years living here, but, I have never been to Collingwood.  We are staying at Blue Mountain.  Very nice facility.  My room is amazing – better than most of the apartments that I have lived in.  It has a balcony, fire place, full kitchen and a dining room.  Not bad at all.

We are here until Thursday afternoon then head back to Toronto and then off to Niagara for 5 days before returning to Calgary.  I am sure it will go by pretty quickly.

Enjoy your week, I am sure I will enjoy mine.

Twitter

I don’t follow many on Twitter.  If you do and you care to read any of what someone says, it becomes impossible.  So, if I find irritating behavior is the norm in what I am reading, I will un-follow.

Well, I did this last night with someone who I would consider a minor celebrity, Wil Wheaton.  He sent a series of tweets based on an excerpt from Eddie Murphy’s Delirious.  At one point, I saw part or perhaps even all of that comedy routine, I didn’t particularly find it funny.  I don’t find Eddy Murphy funny.  When someone re-tweets it, I don’t find it funny, AT ALL.  There was a series of at least 6-8 tweets in a row of a grandma falling down the stairs.  Yeah, whatever.

Anyway, I decided to un-follow.  Over the past while, I have found his tweets to be less and less entertaining.  Now, he isn’t under any obligation to be entertaining nor funny, I have no idea what his goals are on Twitter.  When I un-followed, I tweeted the following:

@wilw And with that last series of idiotic tweets, you are un-followed. Have fun.

I am sure, 100% completely sure that it would have ended there except for one thing.  For some reason, Wil Wheaton (and for those of you who do not know who this is, he played Wesley Crusher on Star Trek TNG and more recently, himself in The Big Bang Theory and way back, Stand By Me, I am sure other movies as well) decided to re-tweet my tweet.  He has 2+ MILLION followers on Twitter and, apparently from the tweets and comments made, they were offended that I had un-followed him.

I was watching baseball (Detroit @ Oakland, ALDS) when this started on my phone.  It didn’t stop for well over an hour and even this morning, I was still getting what are called mentions.

I am not complaining.  Really, I am not.  I could have chosen to simply ignore the attention that I had unwittingly received, but, that is simply not my style.  I replied to many, if not all of the mentions.  Some people had cool comments and I “favorited” them (sort of like Liking a status in Facebook, I guess).  Some people were rude, some people actually threatened me, if you can believe that.  I actually had to report and block one guy.

Being re-tweeted by a celebrity is rare, I would think.  There are millions and millions of tweets every day and it is impossible to see them all. I would say good timing allowed all of this to happen.  I happened to be on Twitter at the right time and Wil happened to see my reply at the right time and decided, for reasons unknown, that it was worthy of a re-tweet.

So, to anyone who is a fan of @willw on Twitter and didn’t like me mentioning that I was un-following, lighten up.  One can pretty well do what one wants on Twitter.

The question I kept asking of those who asked me why I had to “announce my un-follow” was, why are you spending the time to ask me why?  Skip over my tweet.  Was I looking for the attention?  Not really.  I honestly didn’t think that my un-follow would be noticed. AT ALL, by anyone.  Now, be reassured, I do not have an ego massive enough to think that this will have any effect on Wil Wheaton.  I doubt he cares, in fact, I doubt that he remembers it at all this morning.  If I am wrong and he is offended by this then please, accept my apologies.  If you want, I will even start to follow you again.

Anyhow, to @wilw, all the best – continue what you do, whatever that is and I will continue on my end.  To his followers, continue following.  To everyone else, have fun.  🙂

A Friday Mini Rant

I have been in Alberta for about a year and a half, give or take.  I know that I have already ranted about the way that people walk in the this city, now I am going to rant about how people drive.  You see, there is just no pleasing me…

I am not sure where people learned to drive around here, really, I’m not.  I mean in general, most people probably think that most other people don’t know how to drive.  People are generally safe it would seem, but, when driving down a road, why does it ALWAYS seem that I am following some idiot that takes 5 minutes to get their vehicle up to 50km?  Actually, if they got to 50km, that wouldn’t be so bad, BUT, it also seems that they top out at about 40km.

Come on people, that is a full 10km per hour slower than the speed limit.  On other streets, such as Memorial Drive for instance where the larger sections have a speed limit of 80km, it takes you even longer to get to speed and then it tops out at times at 60km.

Now, I am not talking about winter conditions here.  No.  I am talking about nice conditions.  Mid-day.  Sunny.  Clear skies.

Speaking of winter driving, it seems that this changes everyone.  Instead of slowing down like some people might do, they speed up.  Does this make sense?  No, not really.  Calgary doesn’t necessarily do a good job on snow clearing, at least to what I am used to.  People don’t seem to care.  Lots of fun.

Last night, I was returning from my  office at around 8:30pm.  It was dark and there was very little traffic.  The taxi in front of me was stopped at a light.  The driver turned on his interior light and started to read something, who knows what it was.  He accelerated slowly, VERY slowly, still reading.  I followed along, patient as ever for what seemed like forever.  He got to about 30km and leveled out at that speed, still reading.  I honked.  This appeared to “wake” him up and he accelerated, to 40km, still reading.  He might have been texting, but it looked to me like he wasn’t really holding a phone or anything.  By this point, I had had it with this taxi driver and I pulled around him.  I, of course, gave him the finger.  Unfortunately, he was STILL reading so he didn’t see me.

Anyway, I can’t be the only person who notices these things, can I?  Pay attention people.  I am not saying to red line your car accelerating to get to speed but really now.  And when using an on-ramp to the highway when it is clear in front of you, I REALLY don’t think there is much of a need to hit your brakes.  The on-ramp is straight.  There is 400m of it left BEFORE you need to merge.  There is NOTHING in front of you.  Go.  Merge.  Get out of my way.

Perhaps I am in too much of a hurry, I am not sure.

I have always wanted some sort of laser on the front of my vehicle to vaporize the people in front of me.  That would get rid of most of the problems.  Guess it might be illegal though.

I don’t think that I piss anyone off behind me, do I?

Turn the heat up

Well, I made it past my self imposed start date to turn the heat on – October 1.  Prior to that date, I refused, unless of course there was a danger of my pipes freezing.  That didn’t happen.

I would have made it a bit longer, BUT, one of my dogs and I don’t mention any names (the blonde one) decided to eat my slippers and my feet are cold.  Now, I could wear shoes, but I don’t like wearing them in the house.

So, this morning with the outside temperature hovering around the -1C mark and an expected high of only 8C, the heat was turned on.  Not too high, 18C, just enough to take the chill off.

Perhaps a bit counter productive, the bedroom window is still open a bit – I like the fresh air while I sleep and I like a cold bedroom.  The vent in the bedroom is closed though, so at least I am not pouring hot air directly outside.

The “fall” is rather short here in Alberta.  We seem to go from summer and then within a couple of weeks, winter sets in.  I am hoping that I won’t see any snow until late this month, or, perhaps maybe even November.

Anyway, the house is warming up.  My gas bill is also, I am sure, warming up as well.  Keep warm.

Ontario

I work for a large National (actually, International) accounting firm and our head office is in Toronto, Ontario.  I am in the IT group with people in various offices all over the country.  There are two of us in the Calgary office and another 4 IT staff located in other cities in Alberta.

We don’t get together for meetings, etc., time and distance make that pretty well impossible.  We do have conference calls and video conferences and have “chat” tools at our disposal which make communications much easier.  Most of the offices are also on an internal phone system allowing us to contact one another via a 4 digit extension.  A great system all in all.

Anyway, once a year, we have an IT Conference where all of the IT staff from across the country get together for 3-4 days, somewhere in Ontario and we attend seminars, etc.  The conferences have always been, and I would think, always will be in Ontario.  To fly everyone to say, Banff, would cost the company a LOT of money in comparison to flying a relative few to Ontario.  We all stay in hotel rooms and there is the cost of the transportation for the people driving in, so I would guess that the conference is not cheap to put on.  The planners of the conference do a great job.  Last years conference was a good time, it was in Mississauga.  This year we are heading to the Blue Mountain resort in Collingwood.  I am sure that the local IT guy in the Collingwood office could care less, but, what can ya do – can’t please everyone.

Well, since BDO is paying for my flight to Ontario, it is a perfect opportunity for me to visit friends and family for a few days after the conference ends.  As long as the costs for the return flight aren’t much higher than they would be normally (if I returned right after the conference), it doesn’t cost me anyway.

I have saved a week of vacation time and am using that combined with Thanksgiving to spend an extra 5 days in Niagara.

It will be a whirlwind 5 days I am sure.  I have activities planned with family and friends and likely won’t have a lot of down time.  I will see some extended family (aunt, cousin) on my first night – we are all heading out for dinner.  Friday, we are planning on hitting the Mandarin for lunch – one of the things that I do miss about being in Ontario.  Weather permitting, I hope to catch some or all of the Brock Badgers baseball game on Friday evening.  I used to attend a fair number of games.  I always know people in the stands and some of my former ball players play for the Badgers.  I am hoping for clear skies and nice temps – should be possible even in early October.

Saturday, I will be hitting the Balls Falls craft show with a former co-worker that I keep in touch with.  We will likely start the day with breakfast at The Lancer in St. Catharines.  Great food, but, for one reason or another, my sister doesn’t care for it.  Oh well, she’s always had bad taste…  🙂

Saturday evening will be a poker night apparently, with a few friends.  I will almost feel bad to take their money, presuming that we are playing for money that is.  I think we will either head out for pizza and wings at Duff’s or order in.  I’d prefer to go there, otherwise the wings get sort of soggy in the container.  Picky, I know.

We will either have Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday or Monday.  I have missed not having turkey since moving to Calgary, I mean, I could cook a turkey myself, but really.  I also want to go out to another of my favourite breakfast spots, we call it the “Greasy Spoon”, it is actually called the Golden Griddle, corner of Geneva/Welland.

It would appear that a lot of my plans resolve around food.  Hmmm…  Well, I guess they do.  We all develop our favourite restaurants over time so I want to visit them again.  Hopefully, I won’t be disappointed.

No firm plans for the other days but I am sure something will come up.  I head back to Calgary after dinner on Tuesday so Sunday and Monday still need to be filled in.  I might have made tentative plans, but who knows.  I would like to go for lunch with some former co-workers from the Region, hopefully Tuesday will work for that.  Guess I will play the rest by ear – otherwise, relaxing isn’t a bad idea either.

At any rate, the trip should be a good one.  The dogs are staying at a new Pet Resort south-east of Calgary and I am hoping that they will like it there.  I will have 5 days to myself when I get back from Ontario so that will be nice.  I will likely need some downtime.

What’s been happening?

Well, it has been a busy few weeks.

As I have mentioned, I joined Big Brothers and was matched earlier this month.  We have started hanging out and he’s a great kid.

This past Wednesday, I had tickets for the Calgary Flames versus the Phoenix Coyotes in the last exhibition game of the pre-season. I had never been to a Flames game in Calgary so this was a first.  The Saddledome was in ship-shape condition after being wrecked by the floods back in June.  It was good to see.

So, myself, my little brother and two co-workers headed to Saddledome to enjoy some pre-season action.  It wasn’t really much of a game, the Flames started the 3rd period down 2-0 but came back and forced overtime.  Calgary ended up losing near the end of the extra period.  Oh well.  I am hoping to see a few more games this winter – if I get free tickets.  It isn’t a cheap evening for sure.

This past weekend, we head to Big Brothers Ranch Day out in Bragg Creek.  Canoeing, hiking, a low ropes course and horseback riding were on tap for the day.  Not too bad at all.  We started out the day at Smitty’s for all-u-can-eat breakfast – always a good start to the day.

Today, I umpired a double-header.  It was the Babe Ruth league, elite level.  It wasn’t too elite.  The pitching and defence were a bit off, that’s for sure.  I umpired with a new guy that I had not met before.  In a word, I would describe him as arrogant.  I found out that he was also evaluating me while we umpired together.

Now, I don’t know this guys background, but, from what I saw of him, he wasn’t qualified to evaluate anyone.  This became even more clear in the second game when I was behind the plate.  He was on the bases, NEVER came into the set position, didn’t call outs (on fly balls for instance) and generally appeared to be bored and thinking that the level of ball he was playing was beneath him.

For someone who is supposed to be evaluating me and supposedly a “role model” perhaps, he did a shitty job, in my opinion.

Oh well.

I still found the games enjoyable.  We started at 10am and were finished the second game at 2:30, so, not a bad day at all.

I have another double-header next weekend and that will be it for the 2013 season as I am heading to Ontario for a couple of weeks.  All in all, a pretty good season.

So, now you are all up to date.  🙂

Pedestrians in Calgary

What is with the way that people walk in the City of Calgary?

I will admit that people are pretty good about obeying crosswalk lights and most people don’t jaywalk, these are good things.  But, with good, there is always bad as well.

People routinely step out into traffic without even looking.  They are completely oblivious to the world around them.  They either are wearing earphones with music cranked up (I’ll admit, I wear earphones when I take public transit, they aren’t cranked though, I can still hear you, I am just ignoring you) or they are typing away on their smartphone.

Drivers in Calgary are pretty good around these idiot pedestrians.  They seem to take extra care in NOT running them over.  They seem to have extra level of patience with them too.

This is good.  If it weren’t the case, the City would have a LOT of dead walkers on the streets.

Last night, I was coming home from the grocery store and nearly hit a guy who was jay-walking.  It was a black guy, wearing all black clothes, at night, crossing a 6 lane wide street.  He could have walked less than a half block in either direction to a light, but I guess he chose last night to lose one of his nine lives.

I am not sure if he was wearing ear buds, head phones or anything else – it happened too quickly.  I am glad I missed him.  It would have made a mess on my truck.

As a word of warning to Calgarians – If you EVER visit the City of Toronto in Ontario, take care.  If you walk the same way in Toronto as you do in Calgary, and I can’t stress this enough, YOU WILL DIE.  Toronto drivers will not stop for you.  Toronto drivers will not slow down and if you jay-walk, in the middle of the night across a 6 lane road wearing all black, they won’t see you and you will get hit.

There, my Public Service announcement is done for another year.

Walk safely fellow Calgarians.  Especially if you leave the safety of our nice City.
