National Dog Day

So, according to multiple posts on Facebook, today is National Dog Day. I hadn’t heard of that particular day before. It seems like we have a different day every week. Oh well, I guess celebrating dogs is a good thing. For those dogs who have forever homes, I’d think that every day is National Dog Day. Don’t get me wrong, and those of you who have dogs know, they give us at least as much as we give them.

At any rate, to my dogs, Blondie and Hera, my sister and brother in laws dog, Chloe and all the other dogs that I’ve come across, I hope today and every day is a good one for you !!!

Happy National Dog Day !!! Woof woof !!! 🙂

Back to the routine, well, tomorrow anyway…

Today it is back to the regular routine, sort of.  I am off work today.  After working about 60 hours in 5 days, I wanted a day off.  I don’t know how my brother in law does it, he works 60 weeks for weeks on end at times and his job is slightly more physically intense than mine is – he’s in construction, I sit at a keyboard all day.

We all discovered that we are no longer use to working on our feet for 10+ hours a day, not at all.  Our feet were killing us, so were our legs.  I presume, naturally, that there is more gravity in Lethbridge than in Calgary.  Makes sense.  What else could it be?  Age?  Nope…

So, today I am off, no real plans.  The air quality outside is horrible. There is a blanket of smoke over most of Southern and Central Alberta from wildfires in BC and Washington. It is advised to stay inside if you can with the windows closed. What fun.  I think it is supposed to clear by tomorrow.

I have some running around to do but if the air is really bad, I may not be taking the dogs to the park and river today – we will see.

Speaking of the dogs, they were happy to see me when I picked them up last night. I was worried that Hera would go nuts. When I go across the street to the store, she acts like I’ve been gone for 6 months.  Last night, she also acted as if I was gone for 6 months.  So, apparently, to a dog anyway, going to the store and being away for 5 days is the same thing – what a concept of time.  Blondie was regularly happy to see me – she’s been left before and I am sure she knew I’d be back.  I did miss them.  It was nice having them back last night.  A repeat will be done in two weeks when I head to Ontario. That time, it will be for 11 days.

So, wherever you are, enjoy Hump Day. 🙂

See ya Lethbridge, hey there Red Deer…

I got back from Lethbridge shortly after 7pm last night. It was a good drive back, despite a missed exit in Fort McLeod but that happens. I had the gps turned on leaving Lethbridge as I wasn’t sure of the route, then, once in the highway I figured I (and my passenger) could follow signs. Guess not. Oh well.

So, it was a pretty good weekend, all in all. Tiring for sure, long days. I slept well which is odd. I typically don’t like hotel beds. Not the case here. The room was interesting. It was new furniture, all in good condition but it looked as if it was frozen in 1960 or so, maybe 1970. Sort of cool, really. The bathroom was also done in 60’s or 70’s style too. Hey, everything worked and it was clean. The restaurant provided most of our meals and they were all buffets. I’m going to miss a hearty breakfast this morning.

I am shortly off to Red Deer for the day. I’m sort of tired of driving but I’ll survive. At least this is a day trip. On the way home, I’ll pick up Blondie and Hera. I’m sure they’ll be happy to see me, I know I’ll be happy to see them. They’ve apparently had a great time boarding. A few pictures have been sent and they look happy and Hera has been working on her manners.

Only the rest of this week, and I’m taking tomorrow off of work and then a 4 day week next and then I’m off to Ontario. Blondie and Hera will head back to boarding. I’ll be boarding as well, 5 star accommodations at my sister and brother in laws place. It’ll be good to visit family and friends.

Well, stuff to do before I’m back on the road. Enjoy your day abs safe travels.

On being a morning person…

I have become, over the years, a morning person.  Not all year though, only in the spring, summer and early fall.  I get up early and can function from the moment that I get up – without any real issues.

I am no longer a night hawk.  I am not sure I ever really was.  Maybe back in my youth when I would go out to the bars until all hours of the night and then end the evening sitting in a coffee shop with my friends until the sun came up.  I could do that then, now, no.

Yesterday, we worked in the new Lethbridge office and around 9pm, I was done.  I was out of energy and decided that I was returning to the hotel.  The other guys didn’t argue.  I slept from about 10pm until this morning at 5:40am.  That is the longest that I’ve slept in for a LONG time.

The good thing that might come out of the this weekend of work is that I am hoping I will be able to break the habit of having a nap after work.  Right now, I am waking up at around 4am each day.  I take the dogs for a walk and start working at 5:30 and I finish at 3. I let the dogs out after work and then around 3:15 or so, we have a nap.  We do this just about every day. I think I’ve become dependant on having that nap, unless I am busy in the afternoon and evening I guess.  In those cases, I seem to be able to drag myself through. I am hoping that if I drop the nap, I can wake up a bit later and then sleep through the night.  Guess we will see.  A Saturday afternoon nap is still a good idea though, gotta love those.

Anyway, it has been a good weekend.  We’ve gotten a lot done too. I am looking forward to returning to Calgary tomorrow.  Then, I am off to Red Deer on Tuesday and Tuesday night, I will be reunited with my dogs – looking forward to that as well.  They do seem to be having a good time, but I am sure they miss me a bit at least and I know I miss them.

Lethbridge, here I come…

I am heading to Lethbridge this morning for the weekend, well, actually, until Monday. The office is moving, right around the corner apparently. I think the lease was up in their old space. The new space is also larger. Three of us are handling the move. My co-worker and I are driving from Calgary and another tech is coming in from Kelowna to handle the phone systems. Hopefully everything goes well.

Blondie and Hera are spending the weekend with someone who boards dogs in her home. I dropped them off yesterday afternoon. I’m hoping they don’t cause any issues, they are pretty good dogs though so I think all will be well. When I said I was leaving, Blondie immediately went to the front door, looking up at me saying she was ready to leave.  Hera didn’t seem to mind staying and I’m sure Blondie was fine.

It was quiet in the house last night. I was able to sweep dog hair up without two dogs investigating my every move. I also had the whole bed to myself, I still slept at the edge, the part that the dogs let me have of THEIR bed. 🙂

So, a couple of days of extra work, no relaxing time for the weekend, but I’ll survive. Enjoy your weekend.

Sleeping in…

I am on a day off today, I was hoping that I’d be able to sleep in a bit, you know, maybe until 5am or so. Nope, no such luck. I was up at 3am… You know when you wake up and you’re done sleeping? Well, that was me. It would have been nice, since I’m not working to be able to sleep a bit, but it wasn’t meant to be I guess.

I’ve been waking early in the summer months for a number of years now. Come October or so, I switch to my hibernation schedule and have a hard time getting up. I’m used to it now I’ve been on that pattern so long.

One problem is likely that I’ve been napping a lot lately. I finish work at 3pm and since I get up so early, the opportunity to have an hour long nap is very tempting. It doesn’t seem to screw up going to sleep… Perhaps, just perhaps, I can’t break the nap cycle this coming weekend since I’m working all weekend and work tends to frown in naps while working.

Anyway, an early start to the day lets me get a jump on things, as long as I am not awake and also lazy. The plan today is to take the dogs to River Park and let them do some swimming in the Bow. That’ll tire them out. They go to boarding tonight. This will be the first time that I’ve had them in home boarding, I hope they like it and don’t cause too many issues. Guess I’ll find out.

Well, although it is only Thursday, enjoy your weekend once it arrives. I’ll be hard at work. Don’t feel too sorry for me though, it is all lieu time that I’ll use in September to extend my vacation. Life isn’t bad at all 🙂

Taking a break… (from CoC)

I have been playing Clash of Clans for a little over a year now. It is a fun game, very easy to play, not a lot of advanced strategy, good for any age really.  I have three accounts, likely too many and likely one of the reasons I am growing tired of it.  I have been in a great clan with some interesting and fun people for most of the time that I have been playing.  I was one of the co-leaders as well.

Yesterday, after our latest war ended, I decided to leave the Clan without any notice on all three of my accounts. I did send a message to the Clan leader and the other co-leaders, not really explaining why, but to let them know I had left.

I received some supportive emails questioning why I left. I said I was playing too much and it wasn’t as much fun as it used to be.  I am sort of surprised I have lasted as long as I have since I typically tire of games pretty quickly. The Clan is well organized, perhaps too well and some of that is my fault. We have too many rules, I think, and have gotten away from focusing on having fun – after all, it is just a game. A very addictive game.

So, I created some space for new people to join, perhaps. I see that one of the members was promoted to co-leader in my absence. I have been told I am welcome back and maybe after a couple of months off I will miss it and I will return. I don’t know.

I will continue to play a bit with my accounts. I have resources to collect and buildings to build. I will be attacked and I will defend.  I might launch some attacks of my own as well.

The game world of Clash of Clans is an interesting one. You sort of become friends with the people in the Clan, you chat with one another, in a very informal setting. I have never met any of the people in the Clan (with one exception) and over a year, you get to know one another.  I will miss that.  If I find I miss it enough, maybe I will be back.  Guess time will tell.

Keep on Clashing.  Have fun.

Quick weekends

Yesterday was a relaxing day. It also rained for most of the day. The dogs were restless since we didn’t go for a walk in the rain. We finally went out around 8pm and did a good hour long walk. We walked along the river, avoided the rain that was still around despite the forecast that called for no rain at all.

The Stampeders were at home against the Red Blacks, I didn’t go to the game, I gave the tickets to a coworker. I hope he had a good time, I watched from home, probably got to see the game better anyway. I, trying to save as much money as I can for my upcoming trip to Ontario so I figured I wouldn’t go to this game – I always seem to drop at least $50 when I’m there.

It is supposed to be a nicer day today. I need to pick up the rest of Hera’s prescription from the drug store and also need to pick up dog food. Both places are pretty well side by side so that’ll be a good walk. Nothing else planned other than cutting the grass, presuming it doesn’t rain again, I won’t hold my breath.

This week will be a quick one at work. I work Monday through Wednesday, have my flex day on Thursday and then head to Lethbridge for the weekend for the office move. Blondie and Hera will head into boarding, hopefully they’ll enjoy it and won’t cause any problems. They are both good dogs so I think they’ll be fine. The weekend in Lethbridge will be busy but I think it’ll be enjoyable.

Enjoy your Sunday 🙂

A rainy weekend

It is supposed to rain today, tomorrow and for the next few days after that. This is odd, to me, since typically, in Calgary (while I’ve been here anyway) it doesn’t rain past the middle of July or so. Anyway, it has been quite wet the last few weeks. At least baseball is over, for the time being anyway.

So, with rain and no vehicle, it makes it sorta hard to go out and do anything, without getting wet that is. The dogs will go out and pee and what not but I’m not sure either would want to go for a long walk in the rain, or is that me who doesn’t want to go for a long walk in the rain?

Anyway, today I plan on watching the Jays game, do some house stuff (cleaning, laundry, lots of fun) and then after that, well, I’ll see.

Tomorrow, more of the same. Hopefully you’ll enjoy your weekend. Have fun.

The Story of Hera

So, I have told the stories of my other dogs, Zeus and Blondie and now Hera’s story needs to be told.

As readers know, I lost Zeus over the Victoria Day weekend in May of this year. It was one of the hardest things I have ever gone through.  I still miss him and I am sure Blondie does as well.

In July, I had a Friday off of work so I decided to drop off a couple of bags of the food that Zeus ate to the Humane Society. I could have mixed it in with Blondie’s food but I figured since it was unopened bags, they could use it and if not, they make sure it is donated to someone who can – it won’t go to waste.

I made the trip to the Humane Society in the south east part of the city. They were running an Emergency Adoption Event because they had done a rescue of a number of cats and rabbits and had a surplus of them. I dropped the food off in the donation bins and instead of leaving, I decided to go and look at the dogs.

I had already talked about getting another dog.  I missed having two dog companions and I am sure Blondie missed having a dog friend as well.  I had said though that I was going to wait until I returned from Ontario in September before I considered another dog.  I was also going to get a small or medium sized dog.  I also wanted my next dog to be another male.

So, as I said, I decided to go and look at the dogs who were waiting for their forever homes. I came across Hera, who was named Anya.  She has some special medical issues and there are a lot of information displayed on the window of her pen. She was a good looking Shepherd girl, big ears and huge feet – I was sure she was going to grow into both.

I thought she was a good looking dog and I hoped that someone would adopt her.

I continued looking at the other dogs, there weren’t a lot available for adoption, that is a good thing I guess.  I also looked at the various other animals, no interest at all in them.  I am not a huge cat fan and small animals and rabbits offer no interest to me at all.  I do hope they all find good homes of course, but I am a dog person.

During my second trip around, there was a couple looking at Hera’s information card.  The woman said something along the lines of “oh, I don’t want this dog, she needs medication and that’s too much work”.  I thought to myself, wow, that is likely going to be the attitude of many people who look at this dog and decided, I am going to adopt her.

As I’ve said, it was an adoption event so when I went to stand in line, it was pretty long with about 10 people ahead of me. So, in the line I stood, for the next hour and a half.  I finally got to the front of the line to speak with one of the adoption specialists. She went over in detail Hera’s medical and behavioural history, it was very complete. She takes medication to control seizures. It completely controls them though, so not so bad.  I was happy with what I was told and moved onto the next step – meeting the dog.

They brought her into a room me with and a few toys. She was an active dog, didn’t take any real interest in me – she was likely thinking “who’s this guy?”.  We went outside as well and played in the yard a bit.  She seemed like a good dog.

The next step was setting up an appointment so that Hera could meet Blondie – a very important step.  I didn’t figure that there would be any issues, Blondie seems to like just about ALL other dogs and Hera is a puppy and generally, they like everyone too.  We scheduled a meeting for the next day, Saturday, at 9:30 in the morning.  I put a $50 deposit on her, this moved her from “available for adoption” to “on hold”.

The next morning, Blondie and I showed up to meet her. The meeting couldn’t have gone any better really, both dogs seemed to like each other.  That sealed the deal.

I left Blondie outside in one of the pens while I filled in all the required paperwork. The adoption person was worried that I would be mad that I couldn’t take Hera with me then and there, but I knew she hadn’t been spayed yet so I knew it would be a few days.  Blondie was happy to be released from the outside pen and we headed home

A few days later, I got a call from the Humane Society that Hera was spayed, the operation went perfectly and she was ready to go home.  I went and picked her up the next day (Thursday) at noon.

The car ride home was great.  Hera just laid in the back seat, didn’t make a peep.  She likely didn’t know what was going on at all and was quite possibly confused.  We stopped at the pet store near my house to purchase a leash that matched her new collar.

Another short ride and we were home.  I opened the door and Blondie greeted us.  She looked at Hera and sort of asked me “what is she doing here?”…  Blondie was MUCH more welcoming of Hera than Zeus was of Blondie 4.5 years ago.

They played, Hera explored her new house and back yard. It was a pretty good first day.

In the few weeks since Hera has joined the family, the dogs are getting along well.  Hera is a great puppy, well behaved, listens well and learned her new name pretty quickly too. She is a smart one as well, smarter than I am maybe.

Blondie and I are happy to have a new addition to the D’Arcy pack, welcome, Hera.
