The ups and downs of baseball…

The ups and downs of baseball.  Last night the AAA’s played the Angels, we didn’t start out too well, a few errors and our hitters were hitting right to them.  We gave them a 10-0 lead in the fifth inning and it looked like the game might end, but we were able to score a few runs and avoided a mercy.

We played 7 innings, pitchers got some work, hitting was so-so, the defence improved, slightly, bot enough for a win though – dropped the game 10-3.

We now have nearly a week off which will be a nice break.  We were scheduled for a practice tonight, but it was changed to cages and inside so we cancelled.  The travel teams are away this weekend, wishing them good luck.

We are back to it next week – the season is now half over.  Time flies…

Baseball, or football?

I was coaching at the AA Rockies game last evening, the Manager is out of province.  It was an interesting game.  We won, the final score was 22-12.

So, as you might have guessed, it was NOT a defensive gem.  We hit well, ran the bases well and our pitching was pretty solid – there were a lot of missed chances, many of those likely marked as errors.

I suppose though, at the end of the day, we did come out on top.  That was a good thing seeing as they were on a 4 game losing skid.

The AAA’s play tonight and then we are off until next week since the travel team is away this coming weekend.  It will be nice having a weekend off.

A good weekend of baseball…

My AAA Rockies baseball team played Saturday and Sunday this past weekend and picked up two wins.

On Saturday, we made up for a pounding that we took in the first game of the season and defeated the Indians 7-5.  It was a great team effort for sure.

Sunday we played a visiting team from Edmonton.  They were down for the weekend and played 4 games.  They were mercied 4 times, I felt bad for them.  They scored a total of 8 runs in those 4 games, none against us.  That would be a tough weekend for them, for sure.  I am guessing the drive back to Edmonton wasn’t a good one.

We only have one game this week and the weekend off, which will be nice.

The AA’s have struggled of late, losing 4 straight.  I am coaching them tomorrow as they are short on coaches.  I hope they are able to turn things around.

Back to work for me today after a week off.  It was a soggy week with a lot of rain, but a good week off, none the less.  Hopefully the weather will dry up a bit.

My week off…

I have been on vacation this week.  It is a staycation, but that is fine with me, I needed some downtime.  I didn’t pick the best week, weather wise.  The May 24 long weekend was miserable, rain, rain, more rain and this past Sunday, 2″ – 3″ of snow.  Typical Spring weather for Calgary, anyway.

My AAA team was able to play one game last weekend.  I was not there as I had to go to Red Deer for work.  It was a bad loss so I am told.  It was supposed to be a double header but we called the second game before it started as the rain was coming down pretty good.

We played last night and lost in extra innings by a score of 5-4.  Too many strikeouts for my guys, looking at way too many good pitches.  We really need to stop doing that.  Pitching and defence were solid, again.  We made a couple of errors but nothing that turned the tide in the game.

The AA’s were completely rained out, or snowed out I guess it was, last weekend.  They played on Tuesday and dropped a 1 run ball game.  They play tonight, weather permitting, but the forecast isn’t a good one.

The AAA’s play Saturday and Sunday, we are down a few players because of city finals for track and field.  We are also down another player to injury – likely a broken toe.  Not a good season for injuries, that’s for sure.

The week has been relaxing at least.  I was able to sleep in a bit, have a nap here and there and when it hasn’t been raining (or snowing), the dogs and I have made some trips to some different dog parks.

All in all, a good week off.  Back to it on Monday…

Baseball, dogs, work…

Baseball, dogs, work.  Well, that pretty much sums up my life.

Baseball has been going pretty well.  The AAA Rockies have picked up a couple of wins and now stand at 3-3 for the season.  The outfield has solidified and pitching has been great.  The defence all around has been solid and hitters are hitting their stride.  We have 3 games this week, Thursday then a double-header on Saturday so hopefully we can take 2 of 3.  The weather has cooperated so that is great.

The AA team has been playing well.  They also have 3 games this week, tonight and a double-header on Sunday.  Things are going well for the Rockies in the early season.

Yesterday marked a year since Zeus left us.  There is rarely a day that I don’t think about him – he was a good dog.  I wonder if Blondie remembers him and if she misses him too.  Hera is there to keep her company and they get along well.

I have started part of my new job and it is keeping me busy.  I am surprised I have time at the moment to write this.

Second baseball weekend in the books…

My AAA Rockies played two games on Saturday in temperatures in the upper 20’s.  Sunday, the AA’s played and we were wearing winter jackets.  What a difference a day makes.

The AAA’s went 0-2 on the weekend.  In the first game, pitching and defence were solid, we didn’t get many hits.  Game two saw good pitching and solid hitting, the defence apparently went away.  We need to make sure we are on in all three aspects and I think we will be OK.  Practice tonight.  Focus will be on defence.

The AA’s were able to hold off the Dodgers and won 9-7 to improve to 2-1 on the season.  The AAA’s have now fallen to 1-3.

Lots of baseball this week with something going every night.  Baseball is in full speed now.  It will be a cold week with highs in the low teens so we will have some cool evening games.  That is the weather in Calgary for ya.

Not much else going on – work is work.  Vacation for a week in two weeks, looking forward to that.

Opening Weekend

This past weekend was officially Opening Weekend for the 2016 Babe Ruth season.  The AAA Rockies started out on Saturday morning versus the AAA Dodgers.  The Rockies held off a possible comeback and won the game 7-5.  Excellent pitching by both Rockies pitchers kept the Dodgers in check.  In the afternoon, the AA Rockies clobbered the AA Dodgers 14-2 in 5 innings.  A good start all around.

Sunday was a great day for the Opening Ceremonies, temps were in the low 20’s.  It seems that in previous years, it is either freezing or raining, or both.

Teams are back at it this week, both teams against the Dodgers again.  Sort of odd to play them back to back, but what the heck.

Hopefully the weather will stay nice – it is May after all.

Season Opener…

The AAA Rockies had their season opener last evening.  It started out not too badly, but the wheels fell off in the 5th inning.  The diamond was in nearly perfect condition for the weekend and for some reason, the City decided to dump a truckload or two of dirt on the infield.  It was like we were playing beach baseball at times.

Hitting practice tonight, needed badly considering we didn’t score a run last evening.  In fact, I don’t think we had a runner to third base – I can’t quite remember.  So, nowhere to go from here other than up.

The AA’s open on Saturday evening.  Not the start to the season I was hoping for.  Go Rocs !!!

Rain, rain go away…

This past weekend was the Tournament Jamboree for the Babe Ruth Calgary 2016 season. In the days leading up to the weekend, the weather forecast changed every hour it seemed. On Friday night, it was calling for rain all day Saturday and cold temps as well so when I got up Saturday morning, I sort of expected puddles. It was dry, cold, but dry and the forecast didn’t call for any rain. Nice.

We got to the park for pre-game warm ups and all was well until just after the start of the game. Rain mixed with ice pellets made short work of the game, we got two innings finished before the mound was too slick to continue. The rest of the day was a wash out as well.

Sunday was cold but dry. The AA Rockies played 5 innings and drew to a 1-1 tie. Not a bad start for the season.

The AAA team opens the season on Tuesday evening against the Indians. Both teams play next weekend and Sunday is officially Opening Day with a BBQ and Opening Day Ceremonies. The forecast for Saturday isn’t great right now, but it will change a few dozen times between now and then. Good luck Rockies !!!

Play Ball !!!

Last night we had a scrimmage game between the AAA Rockies and the AA Rockies.  The AAA’s had to borrow a catcher from the AA team as we didn’t have any catchers there, but otherwise, AAA vs. AA.

We saw a few different pitchers throw in game situations which is good for pre-season for sure.  Not a lot of hitting, some good defence.  It looked promising.  In the end, the AAA’s clobbered the AA’s in a 3 inning game.  That is the way it is supposed to be.

We are scheduled to play 3 games this weekend, if the weather will co-operate.  If it doesn’t rain, it is going to be cold with high temps around 10C.  Oh well, it is April baseball after all.

If we are rained out, we will have one final indoor workout at the Coyote Den.  Hoping for some dry weather.  Enjoy your weekend.
