Traditions

Last night was my annual MLB All-Star game dinner with a former co-worker from BDO.  The tradition started when I first moved to Calgary back in 2012.  A friend was visiting from Ontario and on the evening of the MLB All-Star game, the three of us went to Boston Pizza to watch the game and chat.  We had a good time.

A year later, the two of us went back to the same Boston Pizza and watched the game, my friend from Ontario wasn’t here but we still had a good time.

We continued doing this, every year in July during the All-Star game.  She has moved on from BDO and now it’s become a yearly tradition.  We catch up, talk and don’t really watch any of the All-Star game at all.  It’s a good thing that I have MLB.tv this year so today, I will actually watch the game.  This year was the 7th trip to Boston Pizza and the 7th All-Star game that I have only sort of watched.

Since I am moving 2.5 hours away from Calgary, she is going to meet me part of the way to my new place and we’ll meet in High River, Alberta next year, that will cut an hour off of my trip.

I have asked her if she will help cut my food for me when I am 87 and she’s 60, but she says no.  There isn’t that much of an age difference, but it makes it funnier.

Here’s to traditions.  🙂

A busy week…

Planning for the move is still under-way.  I don’t have my boxes as yet so no packing gas started.  They will be delivered on Monday and I am off, so I will get to it in a few days.  The packing process isn’t too bad at least, gives you a chance to get rid of stuff you no longer need, or at least that is what I do.

My umpiring for the summer is winding down.  I did 3 games this past weekend.  On Saturday, I umpired in the men’s tournament.  As I suspected, the fans were all drunk and rather annoying but at least the players weren’t drunk this time.  The game was over in just under 2 hours so not too bad.  Sunday, it was A league play-off action, a double-header.  It was pretty good ball and fairly close games, they could have gone either way.  I umpire tomorrow – Cal Ripken 12u league, it’s a warm-up game for them to prepare for the upcoming World Series.  Thursday I am on the plate for the A league championship which should be a great game, I would guess.

Last night I went out with a friend to a new place I didn’t know existed.  It was a BBQ/smokehouse and the food was great.  I had the brisket, some cornbread and started off with deep friend pickles.  The coleslaw had a major zip to it so it wasn’t quite what I expected but all in all, I would recommend Hayden Block Smoke and Whiskey.  It’s in the Kensington neighbourhood.  If you’re looking for whiskey, they have more varieties than I knew existed.

Tonight is my annual MLB All-Star game dinner with a former co-worker.  We went out for the first time to watch the All-Star game 6 years ago when a friend was visiting from Ontario.  We continued it the next year, without the friend from Ontario. She then moved on from BDO and ever since, we’ve met on this day to catch up.  We have a good time going over what’s gone on the past year.  This will be the 7th year.  Next year, we might need to change where we meet since I will be living 2.5 hours away, but we can plan for that, next year.

So, this week will zip by, not that I am counting down the days and hours until I am off for 24 days.  I am looking forward to it.

The fun of moving…

I have been making arrangments for my upcoming move.  There is a lot to do, of course and if you’ve ever moved, you’d know this.

I’ve arranged for power to be changed to my name.  I contacted Shaw to cancel my services since they don’t offer service where I am moving to.  They suggested Shaw Direct for satellite TV so I spoke with those people.  It wasn’t a bad deal, BUT, they wanted $299 for a HD PVR.  Yeah, I don’t think so.  I think I will try one of the tv streaming services.  I still need to cancel my Shaw services, I need to call them though, you can’t do it via chat and the last time I called, I was on hold for over 20 minutes before I gave up.  I bet you don’t need to hold anywhere near as long when you are signing up.

I have arranged for the internet as well.  I will be using one of the over the air providers, they need to come and do an assessment to ensure they can provide the fastest internet they offer, which is the one I want.  The assessment is being done on the 31st and they are installing the same day.  The Internet is not something I can do without, obviously, since I work from home.

I’ve booked a moving van through uHaul.  I was going to do a one way move and drop if off at a depot quite near my house.  It will be cheaper (but more time consuming) for me to return it to Calgary but that works since I also need to return the moving boxes that I’ve booked.  In my last move, I used a company called Ecobox and it was great.  They are large plastic boxes that are stackable.  The bottoms won’t break out on them which is far better than cardboard.  They also deliver them and typically they pick up as well but since I am moving outside of their area, I need to drop them off.

So, things are coming together.  I don’t actually enjoy moving, but once the move is done, I think all will be well.

Mountain Man

I have decided that the dogs and I are moving to the mountains.  I found a place in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, just west of Coleman, Alberta.  It’s about 250km from Calgary but I don’t really have anything holding me in Calgary.  I have worked at home now for a little over 4 years and all I need is high-speed internet access and I can get that where I am moving to.

When checking on the internet, Shaw actually services Coleman, but 3km West of Coleman, nope, they don’t.  Figures…  So I will be going with one of the over the air providers.  I have looked into it briefly and found one that offers unlimited data so I think I will go with their 25mbps service.  That is slow when compared to what I have, but what can ya do.

So, the dogs and I will be moving at the end of the month.

Front of house

Blondie got into that shot, yet when I WANT to take a picture of her, she gets all camera shy.  I love the mountain peeking over the top of the house.

This is the view from the backyard.  The property is about a 1/2 acre and backs onto a small lake.  The dogs have already been for a swim.  I think they’ll like it.

The inside of the house reminds me of a cabin up north.  Laminate flooring in the living areas, tile in the kitchen and both bathrooms.  It does have a full basement, not finished, will be used for storage.

I think we will enjoy living here.  Here’s to the adventure.  🙂

Short work week…

I umpired at New Brighton park last evening, AA Giants @ AA Angels.  It was a pretty good game, took until the 7th for the Giants to get anything going offensively but was a pretty even game otherwise.  The Angels came out on top.  This was likely the last, or very close to being the last regular game of the season.  Play-offs start very shortly.

That was something I had to get used to when I was coaching with Babe Ruth.  Although it is only early July, the season wraps up by the end of the month.  August is off time from baseball, I guess for one reason so the families can take vacation time.  We miss out on some great August weather though.  Older players are also moving off to college and university, so I guess it works out.

I am off work tomorrow, it’s Stampede Parade Day in Calgary, most of downtown is closed and the BDO office is closed as well and although I work from home, I take tomorrow as my “office event day” and will enjoy the time off.  I’ve booked a uHaul cargo van to take my old couch to the dump.  A co-worker/friend of mine is assisting – should be a quick trip.  Will be good to get that off of the patio.  I have a few other things I am going to dispose of as well.

At least I know now that bonded leather is garbage.  I don’t know if the sales person knew exactly what bonded leather was when I bought the set, but I asked if it was good around dogs and was assured it was – so, he either didn’t know, or he plain lied to me to sell a couch.  I guess I shouldn’t have expected much more from The Brick, seems they sell a lot of garbage.  The new set that I have will likely last a LONG time, may be the last couch I need to buy.  I do need to get some blankets for it, to protect the leather from dog claws.  I’ve found some nice ones on Wayfair so I may order those.  I may also go and take a look at Homesense and see what they have.

Well, the weekend is almost here – hope you enjoy it.

Three weeks of vacation? Nice.

In just over two weeks from now, I am off work for 24 days.  I don’t think I’ve ever taken three weeks in a row off before, not that I can remember anyway.

The first week of my vacation, I will be umpiring in a Babe Ruth Regional Tournament that Babe Ruth Calgary is hosting.  There are 4 games per day, I will have to umpire 1 or 2 of those games per day, so it will likely work out to 8 games or so over the course of the tournament.  We are working the 3-man system for umpiring and in the play-off round, we go to the 4-man system which will be good practice as I normally work the 2-man system.

I have a few days off before heading to Missouri for the Cal Ripken 70/Major (12u) World Series in Branson.  The flight leaves @ 6am so that means a very early start to the day.  I guess I will get up around 3am to head to the airport for 4am.  This likely means I won’t sleep much, if any that night but that’s ok.  I have a proven record of not sleeping on planes so it will be a long day.  Not quite travelling to Mauritius though.

I will be in Missouri until August 12.  It will be hot and humid, I am sure, and there will be some good baseball as well.  I don’t have a schedule as yet, but I can’t imagine that we’d have to do any more than 2 games a day.  I am looking forward to the experience.

A friend of mine is looking after the dogs while I am gone.  They will be much more comfortable at home and it will save me some money as well.

Between now and the start of my vacation, Stampede comes to town.  I doubt I will visit this year.  It seems to be more of a 14-late twenties thing, unless you have people coming in from out of town.  That’s OK though, it’s pricy, you can’t get away without spending at least a hundred bucks, I am sure.

OK, so the countdown is on – 2 weeks to go.  🙂

Happy Canada Day !!!

Well, this past Sunday was Canada Day, so that means it was a long weekend.  Happy Canada Day, 151 years old, Canada is.

It was a pretty good weekend.  I had Saturday off from umpiring so that was a nice change.  I umpired a Cal Ripken double-header on Sunday and since I was in the east side of Calgary, I dropped into Giant Tiger.  I was looking for my blankets for my couch, they didn’t have anything I liked, unfortunately.  I did find some that I really liked on Wayfair so I may order those.  They were $35 each but I think they will work well – free shipping too.  I will only need 2 of them as they are 6 feet long each.  Will help to protect the leather.

The weather this weekend was ok, it was cool but Saturday and Sunday were clear.  We did have some rain yesterday but I was still able to umpire last night.  It was cold, how often do you have to wear a jacket in July when umpiring?  Well, in Calgary, I’d guess there is a 50/50 chance.  It’s currently 7C, but Friday’s high is supposed to be in the low 30’s.  Don’t like the weather, wait a day or two, or in some cases, 15 minutes.

Short week at work this week as Friday is Stampede Day and I am off.  I am not sure I’d want to visit Stampede Grounds in low 30 heat though…

So, anyway, it’s the start of a new work week, happy Canada Day and for those coming to Stampede, happy Stampeding !!!

Great Baseball Game

Great baseball game this evening at Glenmore Park. The final ended 7-5 for the home team who got an early lead and never gave it up. There was some great offence and good defensive plays throughout. Those are the types of games I enjoy umpiring.

Now I have a couple of days off, Friday and Saturday, back to it with a double header on Sunday, presuming the weather forecast isn’t correct and it stays dry.

It’s the Canada Day long weekend, no other plans for me, other than taking it easy. If the weather is good, the dogs and I will go to the park and they’ll likely go for a swim in the river. I do have some stuff to do around the house as well, domestic chores – the staff are in strike.

Happy Canada Day to all, Canada’s 151st birthday. Enjoy 😀

The Man-Cold…

I had trouble sleeping on Tuesday evening, the dreaded man-cold hit me.  Not just a regular man-cold, this is the summer man-cold – an even worse variety.  It was slow coming on, I had a sore throat and partially lost my voice to start with.  I umpired Tuesday night and felt ok, other than losing my voice.  When I went to bed, I was freezing.

I felt like total crap yesterday morning and actually canceled the umpiring I was supposed to do last night.  They found a replacement for me so that’s good.

Tylenol Cold and Sinus has helped greatly.  I had a 3 hour nap yesterday afternoon so I figured I’d have a hard time sleeping last night.  Not at all.  I went to bed at 9:30 and slept very well, all night.  I woke a couple of times, blocked sinuses but that’s pretty typical.  Blondie may have known I wasn’t feeling well, she slept on the bed with me which is rare this time of year.  What a good dog, taking care of her Dad.

Feeling much better today.  I am going to umpire tonight, will likely spread my germs via the baseballs to the players.  I am sure they are likely the ones who gave me my cold to start with seeing as I avoid most contact with people…  LOL

The man-cold – at least I survived…

Quick game tonight…

More umpiring tonight. Back at Foothills Stadium, Babe Ruth A League. It was a 5 inning shortened game due to the mercy rule. The pitcher for the winning team threw hard and his opponents weren’t able to get much off of him.

So, nothing much interesting happened, the game was over in 1 hour 40 minutes. Nice and quick.

Three more games this week, nothing going on Saturday which will be nice. I’ve got a Cal Ripken double header on Sunday, Canada Day. It’ll be a good weekend.
