50cm of snow? That’s nothing…

We ended up with about 50cm of snow on October 2.  Calgary got somewhere near 40cm, other places in Southern Alberta were hit just as hard.  Records were broken.  We typically do not see this amount of snow any time, never mind at the beginning of Fall.

The road out front leading to the highway was not in good shape, to say the least, but it was plowed twice by mid-morning.  This amazes me, seeing as any of the streets I lived on, other than 14 Avenue which is a main north-south street in Calgary, never would have been plowed within 12 hours of the storm ending.  I called my contractor in the morning and my driveway was cleared by 4pm.

I have a huge driveway.  It is a semi-circle and about 300′ long in total.  He used a Bobcat to clear it.  The ground was still quite soft so he has to be careful not to dig up the ground but he did a great job.  It would have taken all day to clear with a snowblower, never mind trying to use a shovel.

So, this was my first taste of a nasty storm in the mountains.  As long as it doesn’t happen on a weekly basis, I think I will be OK with it.  Take note though, in future years, you can wait until after the first week of October to come.  Winter is still 2.5 months away after all.

Snow and Baseball…

Although today isn’t the first snow of the season, that would have been Saturday night into Sunday morning, this is the first major snowfall of the season.  We’ve had snow in the upper mountains for nearly a month, on and off.  Today, we are supposed to see around 30cm or so.  For any Americans reading, that would be a foot of snow.  If I check the calendar, it’s October 2.  I am thinking that October 2 is too early for a foot of snow.

Now, some of you might be saying, or thinking, well, you moved to the mountains so there.  Well, Calgary is also getting a dumping of snow.  So there.  Wouldn’t have mattered if I didn’t move to the mountains.

The “weather people” said that October was supposed to be above normal temperatures.  That was a lie.  Although we are only a few days into October, it is nowhere near above normal temperatures and the long-term forecast doesn’t show any above normal temperatures either.  For that matter, the last 2 weeks (or so) of September were also not above normal.

I am glad I am not umpiring Fall Ball this year.  By the looks of it, more than half of the games have been canceled due to cold weather.  Sucks if you want to play baseball, that’s for sure.

Speaking of baseball, yesterday there were two game 163 to determine the winners of the NL Central and the NL West.  The Brewers beat the Cubs in Chicago to win the Central, it was a pretty good game.  In the later game, the Rockies didn’t hit the ball, at all, and lost 5-2 against the Dodgers to let the Dodgers win their 6th NL West title in a row.  Not that the Dodgers have much to show for their 6 titles in a row, not one World Series.  I guess we can call you the Atlanta Braves of the 2010’s.  Oh wait, Atlanta did win one World Series, as I recall, so, I guess you’re worst than the Braves.  I hope you’re disposed of quickly.

So, the Rockies go to Chicago today and play the Cubs in the Wildcard game, the winner moves on, the loser is done.  I am hoping the Rockies can pull it off.  The Cubs are sending John Lester to the mound, I’d suggest bunting everything back to him, he can’t throw to first base if this life depended on it.  They’d likely have to put the second basemen right beside him to field the ball.  Should be a good game.

Anyway, it’s October and I will be watching ball now until the end of the World Series.  Although I hope the Rockies do well, I will be fairly happy as long as it doesn’t end up being a Yankees – Dodgers final.  If that happens, all I can hope for is a career-ending injury or something.

Enjoy.

Great weekend, lousy weather…

The past weekend was a good one.  I headed to Calgary, well, actually Olds, Alberta first to pick up a friend, then back to Calgary for dinner at Red Lobster, endless shrimp and then the Crash Test Dummies concert at Deerfoot Inn & Casino.

Red Lobster was good, although not as good as it has been in previous years for their endless shrimp event.  They no longer include a salad with dinner, that is now $2.79 more.  I guess as opposed to raising prices, again, they figured they’d cut out the salad.  I opted for the salad and was disappointed.  Not enough dressing on it and not enough parmesan either.  I am thinking when I return later this month with some co-workers I may pass on the salad.  Of course, if I do that, the salads will be amazing.  The breaded shrimp seemed to easily lose their breading, not sure what was up with that.  The garlic shrimp was amazing, always has been.  I tried their shrimp with cheese sauce and “salsa” for lack of a better term, it was pretty good.  The grilled shrimp were very blah, no flavour at all – but I think they were supposed to be just grilled.  All in all, it was still good and filling.  I had a brownie sundae for dessert, couldn’t finish it all, the brownies were insanely chocolatey.

So, after dinner, off to Deerfoot Inn & Casino.  I had never been to that part of town before.  Nice casino, smallish though, too many slots.  I didn’t gamble at all, not really my thing.  There was a poker room, but I didn’t want to get caught in a long game.  My friend and I waited in line to get our wrist bands and had about 1.5 hours before we could get into the show.  We sat at the bar and being the rebels we are, had pops.  We got into the show around 8:45 with it starting right at 9pm.

It was a good show.  I must not have one of the Crash Test Dummies albums because I didn’t recognize about 1/3 of the songs they did.  It was a pretty quick show, ended just before 10:30.

I had a long trek home, dropped my buddy off in Olds, we were there by 11:30 or so.  I was planning on taking Deerfoot Highway all the way south to Ft. Mcleod, avoiding Highway 22 which can be bad at night.  It was a great decision on my part.  The drive down was excellent until I turned onto Highway 3 to head into Crowsnest Pass.  Snow started light and ended up being near whiteout conditions as I approached home.  I could not see the center or shoulder lines at points, so it was slow going.  I got home around 3:10 which is WAY past my bedtime.  I crashed out immediately and yesterday was a relaxing day.

I caught the Rockies vs. Nationals game, the Rockies last home game of the regular season and a must win for them if they wanted to attempt to win the National League West division.  Unfortunately, although they won, the Dodgers did as well forcing a 163rd game of the regular season to determine the division winner.  This happened as well in the NL Central with Chicago and Milwaukee also playing off today to determine a winner.  What are the odds of 4 teams being tied after 162 games?  Gotta love baseball.

So, today will be work and baseball with baseball starting at 11am my time.  Should be a good day.  All 4 teams are in, win or lose, but I am hoping the Rockies can wrap up the NL West today, will be their first division win in their 25-year history.  As for the Dodgers, I hope someone has a career-ending injury.

Enjoy your day and week.

Cheaper internet, I found it… :)

I have canceled some streaming services that I was using in order to cut down on my data usage.  Netflix, unfortunately, is gone.  I didn’t use it a lot, maybe 2-3 times a month, but at 3-4GB per hour for streaming, it would just cost too much.  DACN is also gone, after my free trial.  It uses about the same data, maybe a bit more, than Netflix.  I still have MLB.tv and will use it when I need to for the playoffs but renewing it for next year, at this point anyway, is doubtful.

I decided to check the other major mobile providers in Canada to see if they had a better deal than Rogers.  With Rogers Hub, I pay $60 per month for 5GB and each additional 10GB is $20.  It adds up, and quickly.

When I looked at Telus, the same $60 plan provides 50GB of data and it goes up to 500GB of data for $110.  I thought it was some sort of mistake or at a slow speed.  No mistake, and it’s LTE speed.  Holy crap.

So I called Rogers to ensure I was on their best plan.  Yes, indeed I am.  I asked if they could match the Telus plan.  No, they cannot.

So, can you guess where I am going to go to for my internet access?  If you guessed Telus, you’re right.  I will buy the hub outright ($279) so that I am not trapped in a contract because who knows what other options might become available in the near future, or within 2 years for that matter.

Xplornet sent someone to collect their equipment yesterday afternoon.  The took the modem and router and the receiver part of the satellite, but they left the dish itself.  I was sort of surprised by that, it’s got to be worth something but apparently, because it’s secured to the roof and they don’t want to fill holes (I suppose), they leave it.  The tech was the same one who installed everything.  This time though, he didn’t charge me $100 for mileage, a good thing, as he would not have gotten it.  He was surprised that it didn’t work when it was cloudy, he says he’s only collected 4 systems in the past year.  Based on what I’ve read online, I find that hard to believe.  If the satellite internet didn’t work here when it was cloudy, I am sure it wouldn’t work for anyone else either.  Oh well, the latency was sort of irritating as well and it was limited to 100GB of data a month.

Now, I am just waiting for my refund from Xplornet.  According to my bill, it’s been processed, it shows a credit on the account, I am just not sure when it will be credited to me.  Guess I will wait and see.

So, I guess I am moving to Telus for internet.  That will mean I am using all three of the major providers for something.  Bell for satellite TV, Rogers for cell phone and Telus for internet.  One would think I could bundle all of these together with one provider and same some extra money, but nope, doesn’t look like it.  Oh well.

It’s the weekend – have a good one.  Enjoy.

Too much data…

As I have written, I canceled my satellite internet service that I had with Xplornet.  It was OK in the second half of August, the delays were tolerable if not irritating.  It was a bit slow, again due to latency for some of the stuff that I was doing for work, but I could have lived with it.  What I couldn’t live with is apparently it does not work when it is cloudy, never mind a storm.  I am surprised that the technology is that bad, but apparently, it is.  They offered to send a tech out to figure out if there was anything that could be done, but since it works well (as well as can be expected, I suppose) when the skies are clear and then doesn’t work when it is cloudy, well, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what’s up.

So, I canceled and they will, at some point, refund my first-month service which was a no-risk trial.  I will lose the $100 I paid the installer, it was for milage (Lethbridge to my place and back) but I can handle that.

I am using Rogers Hub for my internet.  It is fast, I can do everything I need to do without issues.  The only real issue is that it’s expensive.  My current bill is $189.  This months bill, based on the usage will be considerably higher.  I am hopeful that I will be able to use Tough Country Communications, a local internet provider from Pincher Creek.  They offer unlimited data which is what I need.  The speed won’t be quite as fast as LTE, but at least I can stream to my heart’s content and not worry about huge bills.

If that falls through, there is another option that I may take a look at.  AT&T in the US recently is allowing unlimited data for their users even if they are based in Canada.  So, I may buy a phone in the US and get an unlimited plan and try that out.  I’d have to pay upfront for the phone but it might work.  I need to look into how much plans are of course, but I am sure it will be less expensive than what I am paying here.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the end of the world regardless.  I am paying far less here than I was in Calgary for almost everything.  Rent, car insurance, heating the house, I am saving money since I switched the dogs to Kirkland brand dog food (from Costco), so even with an internet bill 2 to 3 times what I was paying, I will survive.

That doesn’t mean I won’t complain.  🙂

Baseball playoffs and a long weekend for me…

It is almost time for MLB playoffs.  We are now heading into the last weekend of the regular season.  The AL is all wrapped up but the NL, other than Atlanta is still open.  The Dodgers, whom I hate, are in the lead in the West with my Rockies on their tail.  Looks like the Cubs might win the Central, but Milwaukee is right behind them.  It is going to be an interesting weekend of baseball, for sure.

I can hope that the Yankees will lose in the AL Wild Card game, that would make me happy.  The series are all going to be interesting for sure.  I can’t see Houston and Boston not making it to the Championship series, but one never knows.  Anything can happen in the playoffs.  What I do know for sure, I will be watching a LOT of ball during October.

As long as it doesn’t end up being a New York – LA World Series…  I would have absolutely no interest in watching that, other than possibly seeing some career-ending injury.  I doubt the Dodgers will make it there anyway, the Yankees, one never knows.

This week is flying by which is good for a work-week.  I have a four day weekend coming up as I am off on Monday and Tuesday.  I am heading to Calgary on Saturday, heading to the Crash Test Dummies concert on Saturday night and will also get my fill of shrimp at Red Lobster at their annual Endless Shrimp event.  I plan on taking it easy Monday and Tuesday, hopefully, we will have some good weather so I can go on some hikes with the dogs.  It has been good, weather-wise this week with temps in the mid-teens.

Enjoy the rest of your week and happy hump day 🙂

A good weekend, went by too quickly (per usual)…

Saturday was a relaxing day.  Went into town and visiting with a friend and bought myself an ATV.  It even has a plow so I will be able to clear my driveway in the winter.  Gotta love lazy Saturdays.

Today was one of the nicest days in the last couple of weeks.  The temps got into the mid-teens which doesn’t seem too warm for this time of year, but better than it has been.  I had a long mid-afternoon nap, longer than I would normally nap for sure, around 2.5 hours.  When I woke up and it was 14 degrees and nice and sunny, I decided to take the dogs for a hike.

We went to the crown land area only 10 kilometers or so from my house.  Great pathways and trails.  About a kilometer in, it clouded over quickly and it started to rain.  The temp dropped about 5 degrees to boot.  Thanks, Mother Nature.

At any rate, we still had a good time.  Blondie and Twix were very dirty, there were some puddles which they just had to explore.  Hera on the other hand stayed nice and clean, guess she doesn’t like mud.

We walked about 5km in total, it was a good late afternoon.

I discovered that I did miss the Bills winning their first game of the season in commanding fashion in a game that they were heavy underdogs in.  I am sorry I missed it, but in their first two games which I did watch, they got hammered so perhaps it is better I didn’t catch it.

Dogs have been fed, Kevin’s food is cooking and it will be a relaxing evening of watching the Pats vs Lions game.  Back to work tomorrow after another quick weekend.

Next weekend is a long 4 day weekend as I am off on Monday and Tuesday.  I am going to the Crash Test Dummies concert in Calgary Saturday evening, should be a good show. I am also going to Red Lobster for Endless Shrimp so that will be great.

Hope you had a good weekend as well.

DSL, well, no, you can’t have it…

Yesterday, I reported that I was getting DSL service through an Ontario company called VMedia.  It was a good deal, under $70 per month for unlimited DSL service, 50mbps down, 10mbps up.

Shortly after signing up, I got an email from them that they were unable to verify my address.  This did not surprise me as UPS was unable to find my address back in August to deliver a SIM card from Rogers, they finally did, 2 days later…  Anyway, I called back and was put through to billing, I think it was.

Anyway, after explaining that no, I am not in Coleman, Alberta but DO share the same postal code and then saying that I had tried Telus (who was going to do the install) and they didn’t service my location, they determined that no, they can’t offer service at my house.  I was not surprised.  I sort of know how DSL works from back when it was first introduced, I am too far from the nearest switching station (I think they are called).  She tried to offer me their service via cable, I told her that we don’t have cable where I am.  If we did, I would have stayed with Shaw Cable when I moved here.

I was suspicious right from the get-go since if this service was available, my neighbours would have had it added in their homes.  Of course, technologies change so I held onto a faint bit of hope.  Alas, it’s not to be.  They’ve already refunded my money so all is well and this chapter, is closed.

The other option that I had tried already, through a local company, Tough Country Communications might still work.  I don’t have a direct line of sight to use them, but one of my neighbours (that I’ve never met) across the river from me is on considerably higher ground than I am and he uses them for internet.  If he allows Tough Country to install a relay on his roof, I’d be able to get service through that.  So, I contacted Tough Country again and although the technician who came to do an assessment here in July put down notes to contact the person on the other side of the river, those notes didn’t make it to the sales team.  My call got her into the file and she’s going to follow-up.  It won’t be as fast as Rogers, but it will be significantly cheaper and offers unlimited data.  I am hoping to find out in the next couple of weeks if this is a possibility or not.

For now, I will continue with Rogers, it works great.  The cell tower is close and I have an excellent signal.

DSL where I am? Sounds like it…

As I have mentioned, I have canceled my internet with Xplornet.  I was using their satellite system and in heavy cloud cover, I had intermittent internet, at best.  That doesn’t work when I use internet for my work and need reliable internet all day, every day.  I have a Rogers Hub which works great.  It is LTE speed and does a good job, the only issue is that it’s sort of expensive.

So, I’ve been looking for an alternative and have called a bunch of providers.  I am just outside of the town of Coleman, Alberta, about 8km from the outskirts of the town.  In town, Shaw cable offers service, but not here.  Telus isn’t available here either apparently.  I did fine one who offers DSL service though, VMedia, based out of Ontario.  I have signed up and they will be installing next week on Monday.  I am hoping that because my postal code is the same as Coleman, they don’t think I am actually in Coleman, guess we will see.

For a year, I get the discounted rate of $39.95 per month for 50mbps down, 10mbps up and unlimited data.  I do need to pay for the modem rental as well, $9.95 per month.  After the first year, it jumps up $10 per month to $49.95 plus the modem rental.  Great prices and I won’t go broke streaming baseball and movies and what not.  I do hope it works as advertised.

Yesterday, we had some gorgeous fall weather, even though it is still summer.  It was 13C and the sun was blazing.  The dogs and I played in the backyard for 30 minutes or so and we were all tired.  If it is that warm today, I think we will go down to the lake again, possibly for one of the last times this year, at least when they can splash around in the water.  The mountain peaks are snow covered and I am sure snow won’t be too long here on the ground.  October is supposed to be a nice month though with above average temps so here’s to hoping.

UPDATE – 11:38AM MDT, spoke with VMedia this morning and arranged the install.  Well, as it turns out, no, I cannot get DSL services where I live which does not surprise me at all.  I am too far from a switching station (I think they are called) for DSL to work and there is no cable out here either.  Maybe some day, but for now, no.  So, luckily, Rogers HUB works great.

Weekends go by too quickly…

The weekend was good, as most weekends are, but it went by way too quickly, as most weekends do.

Saturday, I did my monthly run into Lethbridge.  I had a 9am appointment at TD bank as I wanted one of their debit Visa cards.  They found an old account of mine that was last accessed in 2003 and it was an RRSP/Savings account that I had set up back in 1990.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to retire on, so I guess I will work today.  After the bank, I did my trip to Costco.  The Lethbridge Costco is SO much better than any of them in Calgary.  You can actually find a parking space within a few feet of the entrance and it isn’t so crowded that you can’t maneuver your cart around.  I was in and out pretty quick, dog food was the main objective and I got some other needed items.  I had asked for recommendations on Facebook some time ago and a lot of people suggested the Kirkland brand of dog food.  I did some research into it and it was just about as good as the food I was feeding my dogs, but it costs me about 1/3 as much.  I was spending a bit over $250 per month for food, 3 bags per month.  These are larger bags (isn’t everything at Costco larger?) and cheaper, I now spend $85 per month.  I will use extra gas and time getting to Lethbridge, but it’s a good Saturday morning out of the house.

I stopped in Pincher Creek on the way back to look at beds at the Brick, they have some on sale but I am not quite ready to buy as yet.  The people cleaning my place were here shortly after I got home.  The renovations have all been completed so they were cleaning some of that mess up and some trouble areas from the previous tenant.  All is well now with the house which is fantastic.

Sunday was sort of a miserable day weather-wise.  It was cold, windy and rainy.  At times, I thought we were having a monsoon.  I wasn’t able to go on a hike with the dogs.  Well, I guess I could have, but we’d all have been soaked through and I am sure it would not have been a lot of fun.  I tried a new sports streaming service called DAZN to watch the Bills game yesterday as it wasn’t on TV here.  It was quite good, no buffering, good video and good audio.  If it continues being that reliable, I will subscribe, I am on a free month.  It’s only $20 CDN per month which isn’t bad at all.  It also includes baseball so it means I won’t need MLB.tv next year if I do subscribe and it supports Chromecast as well.  I also watched the “new” Ghostbusters remake, it was excellent, possibly better than the original.  I had heard bad things about it, all of those things were wrong.  If you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend it, one of the best recent movies I’ve seen.

I watched the Sunday Night Baseball game, Dodgers @ Cardinals, the Cards won which is good for my team, the Rockies.  I think I’ve also decided that the Dodgers are now my most hated team in baseball, displacing the Yankees from their long-held number one spot.  Congrats Dodgers, that was a tough thing to do.  I hope your playoff aspirations die quickly in the last few weeks of September.

So, back to work this morning and another new week.  Enjoy yours.
