The long weekend…

That was a good and pretty productive long weekend.  I got everything set up and organized in my new place.  Now, that is great, of course, BUT, it also took me almost a month to do which is not good.

I was very lazy during the month of July.  Typically, when I move, everything is set up and unpacked within a day or two.  This time, it took me a month, I only moved the big stuff in one month ago today on July 6.

I am glad it’s done.  Now I can start using my new bed, it’s a sleigh bed and it is a Queen as opposed to the double I’ve used for years.  I do need to buy sheets though, and a new duvet cover.  I think I can get sheets in town, the duvet cover, doubt it, but I am going to Calgary later this month and I don’t really have a need for a duvet right now, it’s a bit warm.

I bought myself an Xbox One on the weekend.  A friend of mine back in Ontario wants to do some gaming, so I was game.  It will give me something to do in our long, cold, winter as well.  It’s used but in great shape and it was a good price.  I’ve set up my account and will set up the Xbox today.

So, back to work today.  I did not sleep well last night at all.  Didn’t actually go to bed until 1am and was awake until after 2.  I was drifting off at some point and Hera decided it was a good time to come into the room and give me a kiss – I was not expecting that, not at all, thanks Hera.  Anyway, I made sure she didn’t need to go out or anything and went back to bed.  So, I am working on about 3 hours sleep, that’s it.  Today may be a long day.

Another day off…

It’s the end of the long weekend.  In Alberta, it’s Heritage Day, most of the rest of the country, it’s Civic Holiday.  I am glad I am not working today.

I have gotten most of the house set-up and everything organized, that is good.  Everything will be done by this evening, that is even better.

The weather has been great, temperatures in the mid 20’s, nothing but sunshine.  Can’t ask for much better than that.

Back to work tomorrow for a shortened work-week.  Hopefully, it will zoom on by.

I do plan on taking the dogs down to the lake today so they can splash around and be idgits.  It’s a good hike and a good time.  Hope you have a good Monday.

On-call…

In my new job as Incident Management Coordinator, I knew that eventually I’d have some on-call time. Well, the Senior Manager is on vacation and he asked me if I’d mind taking his on-call time, I said sure, no worries.

I was sort of hoping that there would be no offices outages and no major issues. Well, what are the odds of that happening, especially on a long weekend. So, sure enough, last evening an alert came in for an office that was down.

It’s still down this morning. We need someone onsite to verify power to the networking equipment and if there is power, to power cycle the hardware. Seeing as it’s a long weekend, we’re having issues getting someone to go onsite. Not a huge issue, no one should be working and if it needs to, it can wait until Tuesday.

I don’t have any definite plans for the weekend. I do need to get stuff done around the house, that’s for sure. I’ve had a very lazy month of July. The dogs will also want to go for a hike. Otherwise, I’m sticking around home.

Have a good weekend, wherever you are.

Reflections on umpiring and being lazy…

It is hard to believe that it was a year ago that I was in Branson, Missouri for the Cal Ripken Major/70 World Series.  It was one of the best experiences that I have had in my almost 48 years.

I am seeing posts from the umpires that I met last year and am friends with on Facebook.  It brings back fond memories of an excellent 10 days in Missouri, it also makes me miss umpiring for the first time this year.

I hope that the World Series goes without any hitches, much like it did last year.  Have a great time umpiring guys.  Another of the guys that I met in Branson did not return there, he’s in Alabama umpiring the 10u World Series, I hope he has a great time as well.

I won’t say I’ve retired from umpiring, I am on a hiatus for now.  I likely could find some umpiring down here, I am not sure.  Not sure I really want to at the moment either.  At some point, if I return to Calgary, I will more than likely return to umpiring, although, I sort of doubt I will return to Calgary any time soon.  Guess time will tell.

I’ve been in the new place for a month now.  This has been one of the laziest moves I’ve ever done, I am not completely setup as yet.  I know, pretty bad.  My plans for this long weekend (it is Heritage Day on Monday in Alberta, Civic Holiday in many other places in Canada) are to get the house all set up.  Really, I only have to organize stuff and set up two beds.  In theory, that won’t take a long time…  Wish me some luck.

Otherwise, this weekend is supposed to be some great weather, so I think the dogs and I will do some hiking, maybe take a trip to the lake so they can do some swimming.  Real summer here is short, so we need to take advantage of it.

Enjoy your weekend, or long weekend, wherever you are.

My move to the mountains…

A year ago today, I left Calgary behind and moved to the mountains.  To be specific, I moved to Sentinal, Alberta, just outside of Coleman, Alberta, about 3km East of the BC border on Highway 3.  The house sits on an acreage, backing onto the Crowsnest River and it is absolutely beautiful.

I definitely was misled before I signed the lease, and part of that was my fault for not looking into it myself.  The house is on propane for heat and hot water (as well as a propane stove) and I asked how much propane was compared to natural gas.  I was assured that it was cheaper.  I should have wondered when I was told that, because if propane is cheaper than natural gas, why don’t we ALL use propane?  Well, the simple reason is that propane is far more expensive than natural gas, somewhere between 4 and 5 times as expensive as it turns out.  I have never looked at a place and signed a lease immediately before, and I never will again.

Last winter was, to say the least, expensive.  The propane company that owns the tank wasn’t overly accommodating.  They would not setup a payment plan for propane, for anything I wanted, it needed to be paid, up front.  Also, the minimum order was $500, which is a little over 1000L.  The first filling put the tank at about 30%.  I was told that should last “months and months” – well, apparently, people either don’t know what they are talking about, or they flat out lied, but it didn’t last “months and months”.

I got the initial fill of propane in the middle of August.  For the next month, I only used it for hot water and the odd time that I would use the stove.  Around September 15 or so, I had to turn the furnace on – imagine, it’s still summer and I needed heat.  Anyway, in mid-October, I checked the fill level of the tank and was shocked to see that it was down to about 5%.  I didn’t keep the house overly warm (around 18C) and it wasn’t all that cold outside, temps were generally in the single digits.  I ordered more propane and realized this winter was going to be VERY expensive.

I did some research online, research that I wish I had done prior to signing the lease.  It turns out that propane doesn’t burn as well as natural gas and converted to gigajoules, it is around 5 times the cost of natural gas.  I figured, based on having the furnace on for only a month in relatively mild conditions that it might cost me more than $500 a month to heat my place, depending, of course, how cold it got that winter.  I was NOT looking forward to that, not at all.

I decided that I would try to heat with wood in the wood-burning stove instead of using propane.  Well, that would have worked not too badly, had I been able to source wood.  After several attempts with people “selling” wood, I was able to purchase ONE cord, in total, all winter.  That was it.  There were all kinds of ads for wood, in BC, and you aren’t allowed to import BC wood into Alberta.  So, unfortunately, the wood didn’t really work out.

I looked for portable space heaters and saw some oil-filled radiators that claimed they would heat 500 sq feet of space.  So, I purchased a few.  The claim of 500 sq feet was greatly exaggerated.  They barely heated anything.  It was true that they’d pump out a bit of heat, but a few feet away, you’d feel nothing.  I was able to make due with them until I got the wood in November.  Between wood and the space heaters, my place was fairly comfortable.  The wood lasted until January.

In February, we had the first real cold of the winter.  We had about 10 nights where the temperatures dropped down to -40C and below.  Man, that was cold.  My house, during these times, was about 9C.  Now, that is almost 50 degrees warmer than outside, but still damn cold, for inside of a house.  The only time I was really warm was when I was sleeping, typically with all three dogs, I think we kept each other warm last winter.

When my February electric bill came in, I was shocked.  Using 3 portable oil-fille space heaters and 2 “blower” type heaters, the bill was $525.  That’s for one month of power.  That was insane.  March was warmer and I was able to dial back on the space heaters, the bill dropped by over $150, but was still nuts.  At this point, I had decided, and I think very understandably, that I would not be spending another winter in this house.

I did speak to the Property Management Company about the cost of propane and what were the possibilities of getting the house connected to natural gas.  I was told they would speak with the owners of the property, which I don’t think they ever did.  Even if they had, I doubt the owners would agree to pay the over $8000 that ATCO wanted to connect to gas.  Now, you might be thinking they needed to run a long way to connect…  Nope, there is a gas line at the road.  So, ATCO was out, so was natural gas.  The Property Management Company told me “no one else here has ever had an issue with heating”, well, my answer to that is either they were independently wealthy, or you’re spewing BS at me.

I asked about other properties this company had available and there was limited supply, unfortunately, and they were all full anyway.  I also discovered that leaving a lease early there were a few fees.  I’d be charged around $200 for them having to re-rent, PLUS, I’d still have to pay rent until the place was re-rented, so that really wasn’t an option.  I was stuck, until the end of July.

Well, it got warmer and May 1, I turned off all of my portable heaters.  May can still be an awfully cold month at night so there were some chilly mornings, but we made due.  The sun in the afternoon would warm the house up.  I started looking, in earnest, for a new place to live.  The bump on this road is that I have three dogs and many people don’t want to rent to someone with three pups.

I thought that I wanted to stay in Crowsnest Pass as I liked the small-town life, how quiet it was, so little traffic and generally, friendly people.  I did go to Calgary and look at a few places, nothing really looked good to me and rents had gone up significantly since the last time I had looked for a house (2.5 years) so I was looking at $1700-$1800 a month, which really isn’t too bad.  I looked at a few places in the Pass as well and applied for one place, I didn’t get it, unfortunately, it went to someone else.  In May, I looked at another place and thought it would work well for the dogs and I.

I applied for it and was told someone else was looking at it a few days later and that a decision would be made on the Friday evening.  On the Saturday, I was going to Calgary to have lunch with a friend, do a Costco run and look at a couple of places.  I was pretty sure I would take the second place, just based on its location and the pictures.  As I arrived in Calgary, I received a text message and was offered the place in Coleman.  I happily accepted and canceled my appointments.

So, at the beginning of July, we moved into the small town of Coleman, Alberta, population of about 1400 people.  The house has natural gas and cable internet – I didn’t even mention the lack of internet at the old place…  We’ve been here for about a month now and it’s great.  I think it’s an awesome fit.  I get to stay in the mountains, but have the conveniences of a small town.  Talk about a win-win.

Mountain Man – now in town…

I have been in my new place since the beginning of the month.  I didn’t move the big stuff in until Saturday, July 6 though.  I asked a friend of mine in Calgary if he’d be willing to help me move, and although I sort of expected a “hell no” type response, he said sure.

TO arrived on Friday evening and we went to the Rum Runner for dinner.  They have some of the best burgers you can get (IMHO).  The dogs had been dropped off at boarding just outside of town for a couple of days.  The find moving stressful, I suppose we all do.  They also tend to get in the way.

We headed to Pincher Creek to pick up the moving van from uHaul.  Unlike the last time I got a van from uHaul, this one wasn’t a deathtrap, it was a pretty new truck and everything worked.  I figured it was going to be two loads of large items from my old place to the new place.

We loaded up and headed into town.  I only moved 8km in total so it wasn’t far at all.  When I turned onto my new street, I swore.  TO didn’t know what I was swearing about…  I left my car keys at the old house, I wouldn’t need them, my car was sitting in Pincher Creek where I picked up the uHaul.  The only problem, my house key was also on the key ring.  So, back to Sentinel, we go.  That forgetfulness cost me about $15 in mileage costs, oh well.

The day went pretty smoothly.  We took breaks after heavy items but made good progress.  We both agreed that we are now too old to do a move and movers are needed.  Nothing got damaged, including us but we were tired by the end of the day.  We tried the smokehouse around the corner from me for a late lunch, Limber Pine it’s called.  I had wanted to try it since I moved to the Pass but never had.  Well, I am glad I did now.  Amazing.  I had deep-fried pickles which were some of the best I’ve ever had and a bowl of brisket chili which was amazing.  TO had a brisket sandwich which was also really good.  The portions were huge and the prices were quite reasonable.  I will be back, for sure.

TO headed back to Calgary and I headed back to Pincher Creek to return the uHaul and get my car.  I wasn’t picking up the dogs until Sunday morning.  I made pretty good progress in setting up and unpacking, although I am still not done – this has been one of my lazier moves.

The new house is awesome, I will post some pictures as soon as I am all setup.  I am in town, Coleman, Alberta to be exact.  I am living in a 2 bedroom bungalow with a basement.  The basement isn’t finished but great for storage and laundry.  The bedrooms and living room have either laminate floors or hardwood, I honestly can’t tell by looking at them, BUT, I think it’s hardwood.  The kitchen and bathroom are tiled, so it’s great for sweeping up dog hair.  I have gas heat, which was a major issue at the old place and I also have cable internet.  It will be nice not to freeze this coming winter and also be able to stream to my heart’s desire.

I have enjoyed the last year in the mountains and I am still in the mountains, just with some of the conveniences of town life.

Moving

My move is complete. I still have unpacking and organizing to do, of course. As far as moves go, this was pretty smooth.

A friend of mine from Calgary came down and gave me a hand. He’s slightly older than I am, but, we agreed that we’re getting too old to do a move.

In case you haven’t noticed, furniture is heavy and awkward. I think moving is best left to younger people and professionals.

At least nothing got damaged and we didn’t hurt ourselves. I’m sore though, lower back and feet, and I’m wiped out too, I’m sure I’ll sleep well tonight.

Glad it’s done. Remind me how much I detest moving should I ever suggest I’m doing it again. Thanks 🙂

Staying in the mountains…

Well, I guess I have not had the blogging bug, at all this year as this is only my second post of the year and it is nearly summer.

Same old, same old really.  Surprisingly, I am not missing umpiring this spring.  I have been keeping busy with the dogs going on some excellent daily hikes with them and watching baseball games in the evenings.  I guess I miss the extra money, but I don’t miss being sore from getting hit by baseballs and what not.

After nearly a year living out in the mountains on the acreage, the dogs and I will be moving into the town of Coleman at the end of the month.  The house that I found will work quite nicely, two bedrooms, no carpeting, and a full (unfinished) basement as well.  I will have cable internet, unlimited which will be a lot better than the current expensive solution I’ve been using out here for the last year.  More importantly, I will have natural gas so we won’t freeze this coming winter, or I won’t go absolutely broke paying so that we don’t freeze.

Coleman isn’t a big town, by any stretch of the imagination.  The population is right around 1400.  I am only moving about 10km East, so staying in the beautiful mountains but have some of the conveniences of the small town at hand.

I really do hate moving, believe it or not.  I have moved a lot though, so some may have thought I was a nomad the last while.  Hopefully all will be well in the new place and we can plant some roots for a while.  Wish us luck.  🙂

It’s March and this is my first post of the year…

Well, I have not posted since New Years Eve.  I guess that I have not had a lot to say.  It’s been a pretty low-key winter.  January was actually quite nice, weather-wise, then February hit.

Most of Southern Alberta was under a cold weather alert for most of the month of February.  We saw a lot of nighttime lows in the -30 range.  It wasn’t very pleasant.

I have decided that I will be leaving this place at the end of my lease.  Although I am enjoying mountain living, this place isn’t ideal.  It is heated with propane and if you’ve ever bought propane, you might know how expensive it is to heat with.  My calculations put it at between 4 and 5 times the cost of natural gas.

I have looked, but there are very few rentals in this area unfortunately, so I think I will be returning to the Calgary area.  I am planning on doing that sometime in June or July.

I started a different job at work, still learning the ins and outs, but it isn’t bad at all and I still get to work from home which is great.

Winter is settling down now, I am hoping we’ve seen the last of the extreme cold alerts for the year and hopefully not too much more snow.  The time change is this weekend, which I always find annoying.  Instead of being light out at 7am, it will be light out at 7pm – sure, that’s saving daylight – whatever.

Perhaps I will post more often, perhaps not.  I am unsure.  I honestly haven’t had a lot to say, but, in general, all is well.  I hope things are good for my readers as well.  🙂

Happy New Year

Well, another year has zoomed by.  All in all, for me personally, 2018 was a pretty good year.

I moved from Calgary to Crowsnest Pass and am loving mountain life.  It’s a slower pace, friendlier community, quiet, dark at night.  There are things I had to get used to, of course.  I had always lived in a city so being a city boy and moving to a rural community in the mountains was a big change.  I think I have gotten by most of the challenges and am looking forward to spring and a full summer here.

I umpired in the Cal Ripken 70/Major World Series back in August which was the highlight of my umpiring career, that’s for sure.  It was 10 days of amazing baseball, working with some of the best umpires that I have had the privilege to work with.  It was a great trip, going to Branson, Missouri with Team Canada.  I had the honour to umpire two of their games during the World Series as well.  I made some friends that I hope to have for a long time.  I have now, at least temporarily hung up my umpiring equipment.  I figured after umpiring the World Series, there was nowhere to go from there.  I may return to it someday, if my life brings me back to a bigger city.

No other real highlights this year, I continued working from home which I love.  No commute which is great.  I hope I can continue to work from home for some time to come.

I hope that 2019 is the best year and all the best to my readers.  Happy New Year !!!
