Found an “eReader”

Well, it’s really not an eReader. I purchased an iPad. I was very hesitant actually, after all, it’s an Apple product.

As I’ve blogged, I started out with an eReader from Costco running on Android. It wasn’t too bad, a bit slow but usable. It would be great for books but the paper on the web browser was something else and not in a good way. Too slow and graphics (comics) were bad, unreadable even. So, back it went.

I then tried an Android Tablet. Again, not bad, not good. Its 7″ display was ok, as an eReader, again, nope. It was really a second laptop which I didn’t need. Back it went.

A friend of mine had suggested an iPad. Please, it’s an Apple product. I have previously owned an iPod Touch and didn’t like it – at all. Tonight, I read a number of reviews and checked out what eReader type apps were available and thought, well, what the hell. So, off I go back to Best Buy and I pick one up. The sales guy was really helpful, didn’t try to steer me towards the 32bg or higher model and didn’t think that the new iPad 2 coming out was all that much better. The current iPad came down to $419 for the 16gb model, not bad.

Well, after getting it home and playing with it, this device is AMAZING. I downloaded PressReader for the paper, better than how my pc displays it. The built-in eReader program is great. It’s fast, awesome display and when you turn it, he display changes without any annoying delay.

I’ll admit, I’ve only had it for 3 hours but thus far it is a 10/10. Great job Apple!!!

You will nearly die laughing …

I found a link to this on Facebook, incredibly funny:

http://damnyouautocorrect.com

It is a series of images of people’s txt message conversations on the iPhone and the corrections that the auto-correct makes.

If you don’t nearly laugh your ass off then I think that there is something wrong with you.

Enjoy, truly enjoy.

This week …

I am not sure what’s in store for this week actually.  I know that I have a baseball meeting on Wednesday evening and that I work OT on Thursday but other than that (and normal work of course), I have nothing planned.

I am sure something will come up, it always does.  I am switching my bedroom / basement around again.  Currently, my bedroom is downstairs and I have a large air hockey table in the bedroom on the ground floor.  Having the bed in the basement is excellent in the summer, it is nice and cool down there.  I think that I am going to join the world back on the ground floor though, not sure why, I want a change is all.

I do hope to do some basic web development on my web site:

http://www.kevindarcy.me

because currently, it shows an empty closet and says “something cool is on its way” or something like that.  I downloaded a web development program a week ago or so, just haven’t started.  I am not going to do much, this blog and Facebook are my main web presence – what else do I have to say online?

Well, time to get ready for work I guess – enjoy your week.

Windows Live Writer

I figured that I would see if I could use Windows Live Writer for my new blog location.  Turns out that I can – cool.  It came up with an error but told me how to fix it.  Not bad at all.  I have to admit, Microsoft applications seem to be getting better.

Wow, this is my 3rd post today – gotta be some sort of record.

iHop in St. Catharines

As we are well aware, I like to eat out and I do it WAY too often.  Today, for brunch or actually lupper (lunch/supper) or linner (lunch/dinner), I went to the new iHop in St. Catharines.  It is where the old Golden Griddle used to be along the service road.

I have been to iHops in the US, they are amazing.  I have also been to the iHop on Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls and I will NEVER return to it again.  It was way over-priced and not at all like they are in the US.  So, the trip to the new St. Catharines iHop was a gamble.

Turns out that this iHop is just like the ones in the US – huge menu and reasonably priced.  Beats the one in NF hands down.  The food was great, a little on the pricy side but not too bad.  The service is slow though, really slow.  It took nearly and hour and a half to get in and out so if you are in a hurry, forget it.  They have redone the interior which is good, the Golden Griddle was showing its age and that was years ago when I was there last.

All in all, a good place to eat, if you have the time.  I will be back, hopefully the service will speed up a bit.  As for eating the rest of the day, I doubt that I will need to, I had more than enough food to be sure.

The Weather and Technology

The weather forecast called for 5cm of snow overnight.  Yeah, ok, I’ve heard that one before.  My Grand Prix was in the front of the driveway, I should have switched the cars around yesterday to have the Jeep at the front of the driveway, but, I was thinking, it is only going to be 5cm.

I wake up this morning and low and behold, we have about 15cm of that damn white shit on the ground.  Enough is enough already.

I don’t mind winter, really.  The cold doesn’t bother me, I actually prefer it over the heat and humidity of the summer.  I am getting REALLY tired of shovelling snow though.  The snow that fell last night was heavy too, REALLY heavy.

So, the back deck is shovelled as is the sidewalk.  I cleared off both vehicles and switched them around.  Had a few problems backing the Grand Prix back into the driveway, got stuck a couple of times but made it.  The Jeep, not even close to getting stuck.  I must say that 4×4 is amazing and I wouldn’t want to have to do without it in the winter.  Mind you, we typically don’t get snow like we did this winter, we’ve gotten more than our fair share.  I guess that we are lucky that the rain that we had yesterday (and it rained hard) switched almost directly to snow and skipped over that freezing rain that could have turned the city into a skating rink.

Enough about the weather.  I am sure that spring will arrive soon enough.

I am looking for some sort of eReader.  In the last few days, I have purchased one at Costco, it was a colour eReader running Android as its OS.  It wasn’t too bad and I am sure that books on it would have been great.  The battery didn’t seem all that good though, I think that you’d have to charge it almost on a daily basis.  You could browse the web via WiFi but it wasn’t the greatest experience ever.  Of course, what does one expect for $160?  So, I returned the eReader to Costco.

I also tried a full Android Tablet.  It was good actually, had a 7″ touch screen and did a nice job on the web, etc.  The problem is that I really don’t need a second laptop and this is what it was.

My main purpose here is reading the paper on one of these devices.  I can read it on my laptop (or desktop) pc without any issues, I just don’t necessarily want to have to use the laptop to read the paper.  The Android tablet did a good job of it but the browser is a little slow.

So, after playing with the tablet for a bit, I decided that it also needed to be returned, it wasn’t worth the $500 that it cost me.

I am thinking about a Kindle but when I sent a copy of the paper to my co-worker, he uploaded it to the Kindle and the paper itself is ok (black and white of course) but pictures, comics, etc., don’t come up well at all.  I am sure that this is the fault of the people who prepare the file for the Kindle and not the Kindle itself.  I don’t have any eBooks at the moment, I of course could purchase some and read them, but I am not sure that I really want to do that.

It was suggested that I could purchase an iPad.  Hmmm …  I am not sure.  I had an iPod Touch, didn’t really like it and the iPad is really just an iPad Touch.  I don’t like how those devices work so I think I will skip on the whole Apple angle.

Where does this leave me?  I am not sure.  Guess that I will decide that in the next while.

On a similar note, I am very happy with my new Android phone.  I purchased a Motorola Milestone.  I can’t quite type as fast on it as I could on my Blackberry but the other features and the speed blow away the Blackberry.  Good decision there as far as I am concerned.

I am sure I’ll have more of this later.

My Twitter Name

A co-worker asked me about my Twitter name, DancesWithZeus, here is my email to him, partially explaining it:

You asked about my Twitter name, DancesWithZeus.  Well, if you remember back when I got that letter of reprimand, well, I wanted to change my Twitter name, it used to be kevindarcy or something like that.

Anyway, a friend of mine (since grade 9) is like 1/16th Native American, could be 1/32 or 1/64, doesn’t really matter.  A long running joke is that he is a full Indian.  We were talking about the movie Dances with Wolves (I don’t know why) and he came up with my “Indian” name of Dances with Zeus, Zeus of course being my dog so I thought that it was an interesting name for Twitter since it doesn’t personally identify me.  I haven’t tweeted any “bad” comments about the “all powerful” Region since then anyway, God forbid that I offend poor what’s her name, the bitch that she is (I am sure you know who I am talking about).

So, hopefully this will make you happy.

Hello world!

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!

As of February 27, 2011 I have moved over to WordPress for my BLOG and am hosting it on my domain name:

http://kevindarcy.me/blog

I have been using BlogSpot since I started blogging, it was and still is an excellent free service from the awesome people at Google.  I have imported all of the entries from that blog (http://kevinrdarcy.blogspot.com) into this blog.  I am going to try to keep this new domain active and actually upload some content to my main site, http://www.kevindarcy.me.  You can also send me mail via the address email@kevindarcy.me which sorta sounds like a cool address to me.  That is all that I have configured as of now (March 6, 2011).  Time will tell how far I get.  Wish me some luck.

The phone is on the way …

I feel like I used to on Christmas Eve when I was a kid. I’ve ordered my Milestone, ordered it online and they have shipped it, BUT, it’s the weekend so it won’t arrive until Monday. In hindsight, perhaps I should have picked it up at a retail store, then I wouldn’t have to wait – oh well …

So, my Milestone should arrive on Monday. It is being delivered to my work and Purolator normally gets there at around 10am. That seems like a LONG time from now. It isn’t of course, just seems like it.

So, I have that “anticipation feeling” – I am sure you know what I mean.

I’m going to try to go without caller ID on the phone – I will have to see if I can handle that. Seeing as the only people who will have the number are people that I want to have the number, it won’t be too bad. It will be a bit weird to pick up the phone without knowing who is calling – I’ve had caller ID since, well, whenever caller ID was first available.

I remember when I was still working at Vaxxine out in Jordan that there was only analogue service – no caller ID. The day that the “D” appeared (meaning digital service) I immediately subscribed to caller ID. Back then phones didn’t browse the web never mind Facebook, Twitter, etc – those apps didn’t exist yet, neither did Blackberry’s or any smart phones.

So, I am looking forward to getting my new phone. Have a good weekend.

Welcome Android …

I have finally done it. I checked Telus’ web site and they had a special on smart phones – I was able to pick up a Motorola Milestone on a 1 year contract for FREE. So, what does all of this mean? I will be leaving the world of the Blackberry for the Android. Seeing as I am only locked into a 1 year contract, if I don’t like it, I can get out pretty quick.

I ordered it online and it will be delivered in the next few days. Wish me luck.
