On Vacation

OK, I know some of you might be thinking.  Didn’t he just start at his new job?  Well, yes, I have only been there for 2.5 months, this is true.

when BP said that he’d like to come out to Stampede (which, by the way, starts today), I said that I would ask if I could take this week off.

I wasn’t sure it would be approved and if it wasn’t, that was OK with me.  No problem on the “being off” front.  I had to check with some co-workers in other offices to ensure that they would be around and then, low and behold, I am off.

So, BP arrives on Monday, 11:10am MT.  He finally sent his flight details.

I am sure it is going to be a busy week.  The MLB All-Star game is Wednesday night which means that Tuesday it will be the home run contest.  I think we will hit Boston Pizza for the All-Star game.  Not sure where we will go for the home run contest – perhaps just stick around the homestead.

I have a mission this morning.  I have to clean my Jeep.  If I don’t do it, I have to pay someone to do it for me.  Either way, it has to be done.  I am thinking I may just take it over to the Husky and use their industrial vacuum and also use their pressure washers – that should do it.  I will also need some paper towels and Windex like stuff – the nose prints on the windows is quite nuts.

The BDO Stampede Party is this afternoon and evening.  Should be a good time.  It is just south of Calgary in Okotoks.  I don’t have an actual address but I think I’ve found where it is on Google Maps and I’ve gotten the GPS coordinates.  At any rate, I have coordinates for somewhere in Okotoks.  That’s where we are going.

There will be 3 passengers coming along with me from BDO.  Xena, Chewie and another, unnamed person.  This is the primary reason that I need to clean the Jeep.  The other non-primary reason is because it is REALLY dirty.

So, that is my plan for today.  Fairly ambitious, I know.  But, as long as I can pull myself away for a bit, it will be done.

Happy Stampeding to all !!!

Back to work

Don’t feel too sorry for me and I am sure that you won’t.  I am back to work tomorrow and then again on Thursday and then I am off until the 17th of July.  Not bad.

I do start early tomorrow, 7am.  Well, technically it is 7:10am.  I still work until 4:45pm.  The extra time is accumulated and I will be getting every second Monday off so I get a long weekend every other week.  This is a trial for the months of July and August.

Even though I am off for a week, I still get my next flex day.  As opposed to taking 7.5 hours of vacation per day, they take off 8.33 hours of vacation and I still get the extra day at the end of the cycle.  I can do for that.  You still get the same number of hours of vacation, not necessarily the same number of days though.

I received an email today from my niece in Edmonton.  She is flying out of Calgary on Monday and will be staying over in Calgary on Sunday night so she wanted to know if I wanted to get together.  I have not seen her in a lifetime (just about anyway).  It will be nice to see her again – she was 10 or so the last time I saw her and is now somewhere in her early to mid 20s.

Nothing much else going on really.  I enjoyed my days off over the Canada Day weekend.  Caught up on some of my sleep, umpired a game, did some stuff around the house and caught a game in Okotoks.  Pretty good weekend all in all.

Friday is the BDO Stampede party, again in Okotoks.  I am off that day but will be going and two of my co-workers will be joining me for the ride.  I am hoping to have the roof off of the Jeep if not the doors as well.  I will be able to store the roof under the dining room table (I think) and the doors, well, I will figure that one out.  I am not sure if I will take them off or not.  Leaning towards the not end.

I purchased a cowboy hat today for Stampede.  It was less than 1/2 price and I don’t look too bad in it.  I am sure I won’t be wearing it all that often, I am sort of attached to my ball caps, but we will see.  It is brown so I don’t need to go out and but a new pair of boots.

Anyway, off with the dogs for a bit – we have all been too lazy today.

Post Canada Day

Today is July 2, a Monday.  Seeing as July 1 was a Sunday, most people have today off from work, etc.  I was surprised to see that most stores, etc., are open over the holiday – both yesterday and today.  Sucks to be in retail I guess.

No real plans for the day.  I do plan on cleaning the Jeep – there is so much dog hair (specifically Blondie hair) in the back that I am pretty sure that I could knit myself a new dog, if I knew how to knit that is.

The cargo area of the Jeep is a mess as well.  There was a light bulb or two back there and at least one broke so there is glass all over the floor.

FM bought a shop vac last week so I think I will borrow it and take an hour or so and make the Jeep presentable.

The dogs are pretty much done with their shedding now and they were both at the groomers on Friday so most of the extra fur has been removed.  The back seat has pretty well been designated dog territory anyway.

I think I might hit a mall or two today, just browse around.  I am off today and tomorrow so that will be nice and relaxing.  🙂

Canada Day Double Header

My Canada Day double header turned into a single game.  It was one of the longest single games that I have ever umpired.  It ended in the bottom of the 6th inning (luckily) in a mercy, 16-6.  It should have ended in the 5th but the short stop made an error and 2 runs scored.

Poorly played ball, bad defence, batting practice quality pitching for the most part.

I have now umpired probably around 40 ball games.  The quality, in general has been fairly poor when compared to Ontario.  The Dawgs teams in Okotoks are supposed to be Elite – I don’t personally see it.

The Senior ball is better quality than what is offered in Niagara.  The players aren’t a bunch of whining idiots first off and the ball is pretty good too.

I now have a few weeks off from umpiring.  I didn’t want to have to umpire while BP is here from Ontario, that wouldn’t really be fair.

I am off for 2 more days, back to work on Wednesday.  I am considering taking the roof off of my Jeep – might do that tomorrow.  I don’t really have anywhere to store it though, that’s an issue.  A friend out in Cochrane told me I could store it at his place, it’s 45 minutes away though.  I might take him up on it.

Well, Happy Canada Day to all – enjoy the holiday.

Dawgs Tonight

Hitting the Okotoks Dawgs baseball game this evening.  It should be a good night.  The temperature is in the mid 20s and no rain in the forecast.

Really nice stadium, a small town park done right.  I will snap a couple of pictures tonight and will post.  I will be umpiring a double-header there tomorrow, 11am and 1:30pm – should be good.  There might be some rain tomorrow, guess we will see.

More later…

Hello, RBC

I have moved from CIBC to RBC.

Essentially, I opened an account at CIBC because a friends wife was the branch manager and she’s cool.  She connected me with a personal banker who was very helpful.  Ever since I moved to Alberta, she really wasn’t able to help me with most things AND my buddies wife moved onto bigger and better things so I had no ties remaining with CIBC.

So, I’ve moved my main account and my locked-in RRSP which has well over 60k in it.  I am sure that RBC will be happy to have my business and I hope that CIBC is unhappy.

I have been in Calgary for a little over 2 months and the person who deals with mutual funds at the Calgary branch hasn’t even bothered to contact me about my RRSP.  I was told by my home branch in NOTL that she would contact me within a week or so – yeah…

I was considering Scotia Bank and I called them yesterday when they opened at 10am.  I spoke with someone who, for whatever reason was unable to schedule an appointment for me, someone was supposed to call me back.

Well, after a day and a half, no one has called back.  That’s pretty special customer service.

When I called RBC (my one of my roomies suggestions), the person I was speaking with was easily able to schedule an appointment for today and she answered ALL of my questions.  When she discovered that I needed someone who is able to trade in mutual funds, she changed the appointment and all was set within a couple of minutes.

I was a bit early for my appointment at 3pm today and he saw me right away, answered all of my questions and got everything done in no time at all.

Thanks very much RBC, I hope we have a long relationship.

To CIBC and Scotia, perhaps you need to learn what customer service really is.  For the Forest Lawn CIBC people, you could call the NOTL branch in Ontario and ask Tanya, she’s not too bad at all.  My friends wife no longer works for CIBC so I am not sure she can help you out.  Good luck.

Extra long weekend

I am only working a few hours today, I have lieu time from my excursions around Alberta and I have to use it, otherwise it gets paid out.  I am not allowed to bank the lieu time, oh well.

So, I am done work about 9:30 today.  Not bad.

I received a call from my boss yesterday to discuss the Flex Time program that I signed up for.  Starting in July, I will work an extra 50 minutes per day and I will get every other Monday off.  I had been slated to start my Mondays off on Monday, July 16, right after my holidays ended.  Nope – they start this coming Monday, which is the Canada Day holiday so I get Tuesday off.  So, this means that I have nearly a 5 day weekend.  Not a bad deal at all.

Next week, I am in the office on Wednesday and Thursday, working ITAssist and then I am off until the 17th.  I really don’t need vacation, but my buddy from St. Catharines is coming out for a visit so I will be off.  Looking forward to his visit – I am sure we will keep busy.

It looks like I have nearly half of the month of July off.  That’s nice – I would have preferred to take my vacation later in the year, October or November but this will work.  Hopefully the weather will be nice.

My trip to Grand Prairie is scheduled for July 31 through to August 2 inclusive and my flight has been booked.  I have not been in a plane since my trip to San Diego MANY years ago, I believe that was in 1992 or 1993.  I am not adverse to flying at all, just never came up – I drive pretty well wherever I need to go and I typically do not take vacations.  My vacations in the last 15+ years have been baseball related.  My sister, JB, had a vacation back in April when she went on a cross country trek with me – for some reason, she didn’t think it was a vacation, not sure why.

Mind you, my trip to Grand Prairie will NOT be a vacation.  I will be there for 3 days and it will be busy.  I am not sure when a tech was there last but by the sounds of it, it was last year.  I am sure that there will be a number of items that will come up plus I have a list of 15 or so items that need to be taken care of.

So, a 5 days weekend ahead of me, no real plans.  Today is sort of busy.  I am taking Zeus and Blondie to Pet Smart to have them groomed, they smell a tad funky.  I am getting my hair cut at 11, lunch with my Russian friend at Noon and then opening an account at RBC this afternoon.  I do not like the people at the local CIBC at all so they are out.  I was going to switch to Scotia Bank and called them at 10 when they opened yesterday.  I spoke with a guy, he, for some reason was unable to schedule an appointment with me so he was going to have someone call me.  Well, no one called so I decided to call RBC – they were more than happy to schedule me in for this afternoon.  I need to speak with someone who is licensed for mutual funds.  It’s not like I am transferring $15 into a chequing account, that was years ago.  People pay some pretty good money for bank accounts, I think that we deserve some customer service, that’s not asking for much.

I am also applying for my Alberta Health Card today.  I’ve had the application for a bit, but I keep forgetting my passport when I have time to go in.

I currently have no plans for Saturday through Tuesday although I am sure something will come up.  I do umpire on Sunday (Canada Day) in Okotoks and I may return to watch the Dawgs play in their Canada Day game in the evening.

Have a good Canada Day all, and to my American friends (there are a few), happy 4th of July !!!

Gregg Zaun

So, I do enjoy watching the Blue Jays on TV and I will often catch other games on Rogers SportsNet including the play-offs and of course, the World Series.

One of their “personalities” is Gregg Zaun.  He is a former Major League catcher and, if I am not mistaken, before the Jays took him on, he was a back-up catcher his entire career.

Don’t get me wrong, he is a far better baseball player than I or most of the people that I have ever coached could ever be.  He made the Majors.  He had a long and likely profitable career as a Major League catcher – kudos on that Gregg, you did what only a few (in the grand scheme) can do.

I had no problem with Zaun when he was a player – liked him actually, thought that he did a good job for Toronto.  My issues with him started when he started working for SportsNet.

I find his “insight” not very insightful, his comments are useless and he tends to be critical of players who are far better than he could EVER dream of being.

How many post seasons has he been in?  Well, it would appear that he was there once, in 1997 (15 years ago) for the Florida Marlins and he had a total of 2 at bats and batted .000 – not bad at all.  And he’s critical of current players who play in the World Series?  Come on Zaun, get real.

I find him to be cocky, arrogant and ignorant.  I don’t like it when he opens his mouth on-screen and for some damn reason, he gets WAY too much TV time.  Perhaps some Executive at Rogers likes this guy – I suppose that’s gotta be the case.

I am VERY thankful that he isn’t a commentator for games or a colour man (do they still use that term?) because if he was, I couldn’t watch games any longer.

It’s also pretty bad that he hosts segments like “Hitting with Zaun”.  Please – he’s telling us how to hit?  A career .252 hitter?  That means he was out 3 out of 4 times.  Mediocre at best.  All of his segments suck, plain and simple.

So, I have followed him on Twitter for a bit, a few weeks or a month or two, who keeps track?  Last night, I replied to a few of his Tweets.  I figured, with the number of people Tweeting and the fact that he is “working” a game that there is no chance that he would see them, never mind comment.

Well, low and behold, he did see them and he did comment.

Below is a list of the Tweets between him and I last evening:

  • Wow, people must be lining up to have dinner with @greggzaun. I can think of better ways to waste an evening.
  • @DancesWithZeus not very nice. i am trying to raise money for parkinson’s disease. why are you following me anyway
  • @greggzaun True, very good cause. I follow you because your arrogance amazes me. I love how you critique players who are WAY better than u.
  • @DancesWithZeus i guess i should need to be a hall of famer to have an opinion in your mind
  • @greggzaun, I loved you when you were a Jay, something happened when you retired… You changed, and not for the better…
  • @DancesWithZeus i didn’t change. my job did. i said all the things i say on air and on twitter to the players faces.
  • @greggzaun Well, we can agree to disagree. I hope SportsNet wises up and sends you packing, u make watching painful.
  • @DancesWithZeus sorry you feel that way. you’ll just have to be in pain for the next three years
  •  @greggzaun And, btw, I do know something about ball myself, coached minor baseball for the past 18 years. Good chatting, hate always !!! 😉
  • @DancesWithZeus minor what? you don’t know shit
  • @greggzaun See, there’s the arrogance I love. I’ve forgotten more about ball than u know. U were a shit backup player and a worse analyst.
  • @DancesWithZeus dude your a clown. if i was so arrogant i wouldn’t be on twitter allowing idiots like you into my life.
Sort of honoured that @greggzaun blocked me. Glad I got to him, even for a minute. He claims I got personal, so did he – love it !!!
I have done my best to get the above Tweets in the correct order.  I think I got it correct.  I was very impressed that he actually replied to a Tweet that I sent and that I got under his skin enough that he has now blocked me on Twitter so I cannot follow him.  I can still see his Tweets (I think) and I can still mention him (using @greggzaun) but really, do I care?  No.  UPDATE – Now, because I have been blocked, there is no longer a record of the above Tweets – that’s too bad.
Anyway, it was interesting last night for sure.  A few of his fans (and I can’t imagine that there are many) came to his defense.  That was sort of cool as well – for a bit there, I was being bashed on Twitter.  Oh well…  I didn’t dignify those comments by commenting back – I didn’t need to continue an old-school flame war.
I think I got my point out there.  I don’t care if it didn’t mean anything to anyone, I did what I wanted to do.  I’m happy.
In the end, Gregg Zaun will continue working for SportsNet and he’ll continue making his asinine statements and people will either love him or they will hate him.
For me, I think you know which side of that fence I am on.
